Methane leak detection using measurements and inversion modeling

The University of Colorado-Boulder, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are developing methane leak detection technology based on measurements of methane coupled with inversion techniques utilizing large eddy simulations. If successful, this research will lead to a direct decrease in methane emissions from oil and gas operations.

We are looking for a motivated postdoc to join this collaborative effort in the area of inversion modeling and large eddy simulations (LES). During the 2 year project, the postdoc will work closely with scientists and engineers who are deploying spectrometers in the field. They will first help determine the optimal deployment using LES and inversion studies based on synthetic data, and then will utilize the field-deployed sensor data in LES and inversion studies to locate simulated methane leaks.

The postdoc will work closely with and be mentored by researchers at NIST with expertise coupling inversion models with LES.

Location: Boulder, CO
Start date: Approximately June 2015 (earlier and later start dates may be possible depending on candidate availability)
Contact: Kuldeep Prasad (kprasad@nist.gov)

Qualifications / Requirements

* PhD

* Experience with computational methods

* Ability to work independently

* Strong work ethic

Desired Characteristics

* Experience with inversion modeling

* Experience with large eddy simulations

* Experience with statistical analysis, including Bayesian analysis and Ensemble Kalman Filtering methods
