Role: Here at the Met Office, the Ocean Modelling group is responsible for the development and evaluation of ocean model configurations that underpin some of the world?s most advanced ocean forecasting and climate prediction systems. NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) is a high profile ocean modelling framework with a large user community and developed as part of an international partnership. To ensure that our forecasting and climate modelling system capabilities remain at the forefront internationally, there is a drive towards higher resolution and improved physical parameterisations.
Joining the Ocean modelling group, you?ll play a key part in the continued development of NEMO, contributing to either the global or NW European Shelf configurations. We?ll look to you to develop, support and evaluate ocean configurations; working alongside scientists and software specialists as well as international partners, travelling to Europe and other countries on occasion. You?ll develop a deep expertise in the technical and scientific aspects of ocean modelling, as well as working to evaluate the model against observations and understand the role of the ocean in a coupled atmosphere-ocean environment. This is an exciting opportunity to join a world-class organisation and contribute to the development of an important and high-profile modelling framework.
Depending on experience, you could join us as Ocean Modeller at either Scientist or Senior Scientist level.

In order to be considered for this role, you?ll need to meet the following essential criteria:
1. Background in Maths or Physics with at least a good second-class degree in a science-based subject with significant maths/physics content.
2. Research experience in a related area;
At Scientist level: PhD or equivalent research experience
At Senior Scientist level: a PhD and relevant post-doctoral experience in ocean modelling research is expected
3. Demonstration of an understanding of the technical, numerical and scientific issues related to ocean modelling.
4. Scientific programming skills in languages such as Fortran and Python.
At Senior Scientist level: experience working with large, complex, numerical codes.
5. Evidence of good written and oral communication skills
At Senior Scientist level: proven ability to produce scientific papers.
6. Ability to manage time well balancing the requirements of a number of different projects.
7. Evidence of effective team-working
At Senior Scientist level: experience of working on collaborative projects across teams/institutions.

If you have any of the following desirable criteria, even better:
1. Experience of working with the NEMO ocean model; running and developing code
2. Experience with High Performance Computing (for example, running and optimising code).
3. A willingness to travel occasionally both within Europe and to other countries where we have active collaborations (e.g. China for the global model).

About us: Through world-leading science and cutting-edge technology, through idea generation and enthusiasm, we collaborate to challenge the ordinary every day because we believe in the best. The best for our customers, the best for your career. It?s a career where you?ll be challenged, developed and fascinated; a career where whatever you do, your work will make a valuable contribution to the bigger picture. A career to be proud of.
What we can offer you: We?re constantly moving forwards, looking to optimise our abilities. Which is why, joining us, we?ll invest in your development to help you be the very best you can be in whatever it is that you do. Rewards? There are plenty of those too. A competitive pension, opportunities for flexible working, performance-related pay schemes, some great benefits, as well as 27.5 days? holiday, which increases to 32.5 days? after 5 years.
