Position Announcement

Spatial modeling postdoctoral position at NCAR
National Center for Atmospheric Research
Boulder, Colorado, USA

Application deadline: May 16, 2015

The Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) group at the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, seeks a
postdoctoral researcher in spatial modeling to interact with land use
modelers, economic modelers and demographers to carry out
interdisciplinary research on future spatial development of population
and urban areas and its interaction with climate change. Key functions
in this position are to (1) develop and apply models of spatial
population, urban areas, and land use to address questions related to
spatial development and climate change impacts at regional, national,
and global scales; (2) analyze and employ spatial demographic and land
use data to develop, validate, and apply spatial models; and (3) work
with land surface modelers employing the Community Land Model (CLM) to
analyze CLM simulations of urban climate outcomes for use in impact
assessment.

The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary research group
that includes both social and natural scientists working on the climate
change issue (see <https://www2.cgd.ucar.edu/sections/tss/iam>). The
group has an organizational home within the Climate and Global Dynamics
Laboratory (CGD) which carries out research on climate and land cover
change. The group develops and applies new socio-economic models, and
linkages to climate models, that leverage NCAR?s status as a
world-leading climate modeling center.

The position requires expertise in spatial data and modeling;
familiarity with remote sensing data relevant to the measurement of
urban areas and land use; familiarity with spatial demographic data and
demographic models and concepts; and proficiency in scientific
programming in languages such as Python or R, and proficiency in
geographic information systems.

This is a full-time two-year term position. For a detailed job
description and instructions on how to apply, see <http://goo.gl/FBlZS9>.

For more information on application procedures, contact Nancy Wade
(nwade@ucar.edu <mailto:nwade@ucar.edu>). For more information on the
position, contact Brian O?Neill (email: boneill@ucar.edu
<mailto:boneill@ucar.edu>).

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at University of Colorado Boulder is seeking candidates for multiple positions in the fields of scientific programming, database management, and web programming. Successful candidates will work with NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) scientists on analyzing observations of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations.

The Global Monitoring Division at NOAA ESRL collects air samples from around the world, measures trace gas species in those samples, and studies those measurements to produce analyses like CarbonTracker, GLOBALVIEW, and the Annual Greenhouse Gas Index. ESRL processes thousands of air samples each year and is responsible for tracking these results in database systems and making results available to scientists and the general public. Simulating greenhouse gas distributions in the atmosphere requires high-resolution, accurate meteorological models, implemented on high-performance computing systems.
Scientific programmers and data specialists are needed to support greenhouse gas observations processing and modeling activities at ESRL. Duties include working with project scientists to develop and implement new atmospheric models, support existing codes, manage database systems, perform quality-control analysis of observations, conduct simulations, develop new software, help to prepare product releases, and manage group computing resources. Applicants should be familiar with a broad range of software tools on Unix systems and should be comfortable working as part of a collaborative team.

Position description and application instructions can be found at http://www.jobsatcu.com/postings/98797.

Scientific Programmer (m/f) ? 2015-15 ?
to contribute to the development of a European Radiative Transfer Library in the context of the EC funded project ISENES2.
The successful applicant will help lead an initiative to develop a fast, efficient, and computationally well-structured radiative transfer library for use by Earth System Models. The development will be based on an existing radiative transfer code, and provide a common framework for its incorporation in different Earth System Models.
Applicants with experience in scientific programming using Fortran and/or C/C++, and code analysis and profilling of high performance platforms are especially sought after. Familiarity with meteorology and/or radiative transfer is advantageous, as is a PhD, and or advanced concepts in software engineering. Good communication skills, availability to travel and cooperate with code developments in partnering institutes in Paris and Exeter are also desirable.
