Contract Type: Permanent
Work Hours: 37 per week

Salary Information: ?26,010 and for exceptional candidates up to ?35,040 + competitive benefits including Civil Service Pension

Technology and Science at the Met Office

The Met Office is a world-leading weather and climate service and we?re continuously developing innovative ways to enhance and optimise our capabilities. Technology and science go hand-in-hand to drive our success. Your technical skills, combined with your scientific understanding, can help us develop and improve the cutting edge model and systems that deliver air quality forecasts to the public. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a world-class organisation and contribute to developing and improving the software that supports the science behind everything we do.

Scientific Software Development to Enable Forecast Excellence

Providing forecasts and advice about weather-related hazards in order to protect people is nothing new for the Met Office. But now an exciting new area has opened up to exploit our expertise in atmospheric science through the development and delivery of air quality forecasting. An opportunity has arisen for a Scientific Software Engineer to take a leading role in the development of our air quality model AQUM. You will be working in a team of applied scientists who develop, maintain and operate this complex computer model and apply it to predicting atmospheric pollution and air quality. Working with some of the most advanced high performance computing facilities in the UK, you will apply your knowledge of software design and implementation to develop and further improve the model. The value of your work will be apparent everyday through improved daily forecasts delivered to the public.

Job Responsibilities

In order to inform your software engineering work you will need to develop a sound understanding of the principles underlying the atmospheric model. Then, working in collaboration with science and software experts in the Met Office and at UK university institutions (Cambridge, Leeds, Oxford), you will play a leading role in the implementation of a new aerosol modelling scheme which has the potential to give a step change increase in our modelling capability. The job is offered at two levels, depending on experience and skills: Scientific Software Engineer or Senior Scientific Software Engineer.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

To succeed in this challenging role you will need the following essential experience and skills:

1. Undergraduate degree (2.1 or higher, or equivalent) in a physical / environmental science or mathematics.
2. Post graduate experience in developing and running complex scientific computer programmes, using Fortran, Python or comparable languages. For the Senior Software Engineer role experience in code design is required.
3. Demonstrated good analytical problem solving skills and a careful approach to checking work.
4. Successful experience of working in a team. For the Senior Software Engineer role experience in directing the work of other scientists/software engineers may be required.
5. Demonstrated ability to deliver to deadlines and the flexibility to re-prioritise work in light of shifting and sometimes conflicting priorities.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Additionally, the following skills and experience are desirable:
1. Experience of running the Met Office Unified Model.
2. Experience with formal code management systems.
3. An interest in the science of air quality.
4. Experience in refactoring existing code to improve its quality, flexibility and performance.

Additional Supplementary Information

Please note, if you do not currently have permission to work in the UK, we will be unable to provide this for you for this vacancy.
