University of Hawaii, School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology (SOEST), Numerical Modeling of Physical Oceanography.
SOEST at the University of Hawai`i in Manoa seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to collaborate in a significant ocean modeling project to understand how the interaction of large-scale ocean circulation with fine-scale topography in the western Pacific ocean affects predictability. This is a collaborative effort with Scripps and MIT to understand how the generated energies affect global model predictions. Using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and state-of-the-art adjoint-based four-dimensional variational data assimilation, observations from the field program will be combined with the model to understand how the dynamics of the regional-scale flows are altered. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on similar issues and research and will be responsible for performing model simulations, 4D-Var state-estimation, help to develop new techniques, and dynamical analysis of energy cascades. It is expected that the successful candidate will publish scientific articles and contribute to and/or write new funding proposals, etc.
Minimum Qualifications include: Ph.D. or equivalent in physical oceanography, ocean engineering, or related field, ability to work well independently as part of a team, and strong communication skills both verbal and written. Preferred candidates will have experience with ROMS, strong mathematical and computational skills with a background in physical oceanography. Candidates should be motivated to drive new developments in data assimilation within numerical modeling.
The appointment will be reviewed annually and renewed based upon performance and funding. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately, and will proceed until the position is filled. Electronic applications containing: (1) curriculum vitae; (2) one-page statement of research interests; (3) one published academic article most indicative of your work; (4) contact information for three references to powellb@hawaii.edu. Email verification will be sent upon receipt of your application, please inquire if receipt is not received. For more information, please contact Dr. Brian Powell <powellb@hawaii.edu>.
The University of Hawaii is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, veteran status, or disability. Applications from women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged.

University of Hawaii, School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology (SOEST), Antarctic Oceanography Ecosystem Modeling.
SOEST at the University of Hawai`i in Manoa seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to collaborate in a significant inter-disciplinary and multi-institional (Scripps, U. Hawaii, U. Alaska) project to observe, simulate, and understand the extreme biological productivity blooms that occur in the fjords of the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) coupled with a state-of-the-art ecosystem model, we will examine the processes that sustain a season long bloom in the Antarctic fjord. A significant observational compaign will be conducted, and the observations will help to validate the model processes. The results will provide new insight into the mechanisms that make the Antarctic fjords among the most biologically productive sites and how these mechanisms may be sensitive to changes in the Earth system. Further research into the influence of these physical processes on the biology of the region will be encouraged. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on similar issues and research.
The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new ecosystem simulation of Antarctic fjords, comparison with in situ data, scientific research into impacts on the Fjord ecosystem, and understanding the controlling factors of nutrient delivery into the ecosystem. It is expected that the successful candidate will publish scientific articles and contribute to and/or write new funding proposals, etc.
Minimum Qualifications include: Ph.D. or equivalent in biological oceanography, physical oceanography (with ecosystem experience), marine ecosystems, or related field, ability to work well independently as part of a team, and strong communication skills both verbal and written. Preferred candidates will have experience with ecosystem modeling, mathematical and computational skills with background in ecosystem dynamics. Candidates should be motivated to drive new developments in ecosystems simulations.

Dear Madam/Sir,
Could you please advertise the following vacancy announcement on the
Met-jobs site?
Best Regards,
Rein Haarsma
*PhD position on atmospheric modeling of hydrological extremes *
**Responsibilities**
*The candidate will analyze the simulations of a new generation
high-resolution (~25 km) global climate models that will produce more
robust and trustworthy projections for the next decades. The analysis
will concentrate on atmospheric dynamics and ocean-atmosphere
interactions in current and future climate. The focus will be on the
North Atlantic and Europe. It will include the analysis of ocean mixing,
air-sea interaction, mid-latitude jets, blocking and their combined
effect on the moisture and heat transport towards Europe, including the
occurrence of extreme events such as droughts, heat waves and flooding.
In the final phase of the PhD the candidate will translate these results
to risk assessments for end-users of climate information. This will
contain a physical description of the hazards and their drivers, the
potential future changes of the events and statistics of the events.*
*Required qualifications and skills*
*We are looking for a candidate with a finished master degree in
meteorology, physics or applied mathematics, or equivalent study. The
candidate should have experience with coding in Fortran, C or an
equivalent language. Experience with analysis tools like, R, IDL, ncl,
Matlab, Python is required, and experience with Unix/Linux environment
is desirable. The candidate should have a good understanding of physical
processes, preferably in a scientific area related to weather and/or
climate. In addition good communication skills are required and an open
attitude to translate scientific results to end-users.*
*This work will be done as part of the European project PRIMAVERA
(PRocess-based climate sIMulation: AdVances in high-resolution modeling
and European climate Risk Assessment). The candidate is expected to
publish his/her results in peer reviewed journals, which will form the
basis of a PhD thesis to be defended at Wageningen University (promotor
Prof. W. Hazeleger, co promotor Dr. R. Haarsma).*
*Organization*
*The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is a research,
monitoring and forecasting organization on meteorological and seismic
events. It provides weather alerts, produces climate information, and
gives advice and information to stakeholders and the general public.*
*Other conditions of employement *
*In addition to the salary and holiday pay an end-of-year payment can be
expected, the so-called 13th month. The national government strongly
adheres to personal growth and carreer development and offers several
possibilities to facilitate this. The terms of employment include
amongst others a maximum 55% paid parental leave (conditions apply),
facilities to study, additional arrangements for****leave for elderly
