The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado is seeking a Research Associate (?Postdoctoral Scientist?) to work in the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Physical Science Division (PSD) on studies examining interannual to decadal variability and predictability, both in the Arctic and within the global climate system. This is a two-year position (subject to renewal after the first year) based at NOAA/ESRL in Boulder, Colorado.

Responsibilities
The position responsibilities include conducting both statistical analyses and modeling experiments aimed at improved understanding of processes driving interannual to decadal climate variability, with an emphasis on quantifying how interactions of these different processes provide and/or limit both predictability and realized forecast skill. Of particular interest is diagnosing two-way interactions between variations in different ocean basins, such as the tropical IndoPacific, the extratropical Pacific and Atlantic (notably including their western boundary currents), and the Arctic (including sea ice variations there); and how these ocean variations might lead to predictable changes in extratropical weather and climate and related extreme events. The candidate will diagnose both observations and global climate model (GCM) output, conduct GCM simulations, and employ other tools such as statistical and/or dynamical models of varying complexity. The position involves working with a team at CIRES/NOAAESRL and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL); it is anticipated that the research will involve GFDL?s suite of climate models.

Requirements
? PhD with detailed knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: atmospheric sciences, sea ice physics and dynamics, and physical oceanography.
? specific expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: climate and geophysical fluid dynamics; climate diagnostics; climate models and their applications; and statistical methods.
? experience analyzing large datasets and model output
? ability to design and conduct model experiments is desirable
? conduct original research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and give presentations of research at science conferences
? knowledge of and experience with: analysis/graphics packages (e.g. NCL), geophysical data formats (NetCDF), programming language (Fortran), and operating systems (Linux/mac OSX)
