Please find attached an opportunity to work in the "Climate Information for International Development" team. This is based in Exeter and is being advertised at Scientist/Senior Scientist level (depending on experience). Further details available from http://careers.metoffice.gov.uk/current-vacancies.
Closing date is 30th August.
About the role
High profile organisations across the world rely on us to understand how weather and climate affects their interests and operations. With world-class capabilities and cutting-edge technology, we translate our scientific expertise into bespoke products and services that advise and guide our varied customer base. While our customers' needs are increasingly broad, we meet challenges with innovation and use our unrivalled understanding of science to solve their problems and exceed their expectations.
As part of our Climate Information for International Development team, this varied role will see you deliver and apply scientific research around regional climate modelling for a wide range of customers, including international Met Services, Non-Government Organisations, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). You'll work directly with customers as you develop suitable techniques for analysing and quantifying the impacts and associated risks of climate change upon their business. Working closely with other scientists and with colleagues in Business Development, you'll also produce project reports and lead the publication of scientific papers based on the project outputs. Representing the Met Office at customer meetings, scientific conferences and seminars, you'll enjoy plenty of exposure and the opportunity to develop and apply science in a very real and rewarding way. We're looking for talented Scientists and this is an excellent opportunity to help us - and our customers - gain a greater understanding of climate change.
You'll be required to travel abroad for work potentially up to four times per year, working mainly with developing countries.
About you
A driven individual with a strong scientific or technical background, you're able to present scientific and technical knowledge in an accessible way for a range of customers. You'll also be able to meet the below essential criteria. If you have any of the additional desirable criteria, that's even better.
Essential
1. A PhD in a Physical Science or Mathematics/Statistics (or equivalent research experience in a relevant field).
2. Experience of analysing, validating and interpreting complex datasets in a scientifically appropriate manner.
3. Strong mathematical and analytical skills and experience of programming in one or more high level computing languages (eg IDL, Python, R, Grads).
4. Demonstrated drive to deliver high quality output in a timely fashion through effective planning and creation of solutions to obstacles. If you're a Senior Scientist, you'll also be able to provide evidence of planning and leading major research project or leading development of outputs for customers.
5. Demonstrated ability to listen actively, discuss and understand the needs of customers and propose solutions to address those needs. If you're a Senior Scientist, you'll also be able to provide evidence of presenting innovative solutions to significant research problems or customer requirements.
Desirable
1. Experience with running regional climate / weather models.
2. Understanding of regional climate processes, regional climate change or development of regional climate information.
3. Experience of using a High Performance Computer.
4. Experience of climate impacts, hazard mapping or risk management.
