Dear all,
A PhD grant in the field of global climate geoingineering is available in the climate modelling group of the Centre National de Recherches M?t?orologiques (CNRM-GAME affiliated to both M?t?o-France and CNRS) at Toulouse, France.
The main PhD objective is to assess, and possibly constrain, the global climate response to solar radiation management (SRM), using both the multi-model archive from the GeoMIP project and dedicated sensitivity experiments with the CNRM Earth System Model.
The most emblematic SRM technique consists in injecting sulfate aerosols into the stratosphere, thereby mimicking the influence of natural volcanic eruptions on the climate system. The candidate will analyze the impacts of SRM not only on the surface energy budget but also on the water and carbon cycles, using Earth System Model simulations as well as available data of observed natural analogues (e.g., composites of years after major volcanic eruptions).
We are looking for a candidate with a master degree in meteorology, physics or applied mathematics. The candidate should have experience with coding in Fortran, C or an equivalent language. Experience with analysis tools like, R, IDL, ncl, Matlab, Python is required, and experience with Unix/Linux environment is desirable. The candidate should have a good understanding of physical processes, preferably in a scientific area related to weather and/or climate. Good communication skills are also required.
The candidate is expected to publish his/her results in peer reviewed journals, which will form the basis of a PhD thesis to be defended at Paul Sabatier/Toulouse University.
More information is available via

Kind regards
Roland S?f?rian

Call for a postdoctoral fellowship in Paleo Climate Modelling
The Millennium Nucleus in ?Paleoclimate of the Southern Hemisphere?
invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in
paleoclimate modeling (possibly renewable for another year). The main
goal of our research group is to understand the evolution of the coupled
atmosphere, ocean and biosphere over broadly the last 25,000 years over
the Southern Hemisphere. More specifically our study areas include
western Patagonia and the adjacent Ocean.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences,
Climate Modelling or related field. Good programming skills, and
experience in paleo climate modeling are highly desirable. Showing
willingness and ability to conduct independent research while being a
team player is also expected. You will join an active research group
that addresses the study of paleoclimate combining empirical and
modelling approaches, with opportunities of fieldwork in Patagonia. We
are an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in the disciplines
of atmospheric sciences, empirical and physical paleo-oceanography,
paleo-ecology and glacial geology.
Salary is assigned according to CONICYT standards, equivalent to ca. 29
kUSD per year, which corresponds roughly to 2.5 times the Chilean per
capita average income.
Interested applicants should send their CV and a brief research proposal
(up to 2 pages) to Dr. Maisa Rojas (maisa@dgf.uchile.cl
<mailto:maisa@dgf.uchile.cl>) by September 30 2015. The selected
candidate is expected to start early 2016. For more information don?t
hesitate to contact me.

Endowed Chair in Water Research
The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society jointly with the
Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences seek a leader
in the field of Physical Hydrology. The ideal candidate will be an
associate or full professor (or equivalent rank) who investigates the
fundamental physical processes that govern water movement and storage at
the Earth's surface and shallow subsurface. We are particularly
interested in researchers who demonstrate a track record in problem
oriented collaborative research.
Active areas of enquiry may include observations and modeling of the
hydrological cycle to understand how regional to large-scale water
movement interacts with and reacts to the Earth?s climate, land use and
land cover change, and consumptive use at timescales of seasons to
centuries. Experience in applying these principles to societal problems
including water governance, resource management, future freshwater
availability, and food and water security is desirable. Applicants
should complement existing strengths in climate modeling, remote sensing
and geophysics.
The successful candidate will develop a vigorous research program that
significantly advances disciplinary knowledge in earth and environmental
sciences, and will actively engage in interdisciplinary collaborations
with faculty and students across the Institute.
A successful candidate must have an outstanding record of national and
international scholarly achievement, a proven record of successful
research funding, and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and
graduate teaching and advising. Candidates are encouraged to contact
Professor Amanda Lynch, chair of the search committee, with questions
about the nature of the position.
All candidates should submit: (1) a cover letter describing their
interest in the position and any confidentiality requirements, (2) a
curriculum vitae, (3) a research statement, (4) a teaching statement,
and (5) the names of five references who would be contacted at the
appropriate time by the search committee. To receive full consideration
applications must be received by October 16, 2015. The search will
remain open until the position is filled or the search is closed. Brown
is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer, and women and
minorities are encouraged to apply. Send materials to:
