Atmospheric Scientist, radiation measurements
? Based in Lauder, Central Otago, New Zealand
? Permanent, full-time
NIWA is New Zealand's leading provider of natural resources and environmental research and applied science services, specialising in atmospheric, climate, freshwater and marine research, with more than 600 staff in 15 sites around New Zealand.
NIWA is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled atmospheric measurement scientist to contribute to research on atmospheric radiation science, and provide key radiation measurements. A focus of NIWA research is to improve observations and knowledge of climate processes in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. One key process is radiation as affected by clouds and aerosols. At its Lauder site, NIWA has an established radiation measurement project which provides information on radiation variables to international databases and assessments, and supports extensive New Zealand research in atmospheric science and its human impacts. This position is to increase capacity in this area.
You will drive a measurement programme in which you will assess, propose, and acquire new instruments suitable for on-site or campaign deployments. You will lead the evaluation of new and existing measurements resulting in publications in the peer-reviewed literature. As a member of the Lauder team, you will advise or assist in other Lauder-based measurements (e.g., ozone, FTIR, UV/Vis) and represent the measurements at international forums as required. You will have strong interactions with the global radiation community, including the satellite community and modelling activities in the areas of radiation, clouds, and aerosols.
You are expected to have a postgraduate research degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area of atmospheric science, physics, engineering, or similar. You will have several years of experience with radiation metrology and be proficient with measurement electronics, optics, and associated software. A strong background in spectroscopy is expected with an understanding of the process of deriving atmospheric properties from the measured radiation signal, and an established record of publishing such results.
As an engaging team player, you will enjoy working with collaborators in New Zealand and overseas, communicating positively and productively with a wide range of staff. You will be self-motivated and results-orientated, conscientious and well organised, with a keen eye for detail. You will have proven leadership skills or the potential to develop into a scientific leader in your area. You will have good writing skills including proposals, technical reporting, documentation, and research publications. You will enjoy living in a rural part of New Zealand known for its high standard of living and good recreational opportunities.
NIWA offers competitive remuneration and benefits.
A job description, an online application portal, and further information about NIWA can be found at https://careers.sciencenewzealand.org/niwa/niwa-jobs Applications close on September 25, 2015.

Sandia National Laboratories, in Albuquerque, NM, is currently recruiting a
postdoctoral research associate to work on projects related to
high-resolution global earth system models and high-resolution regional or
large-eddy simulations (LES). We are interested in developing and using
these models to improve our understanding of atmospheric processes in the
Arctic. The selected candidates will work with the SNL scientists on one
or more of the following projects: 1) Improving the method of comparison
of data from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program (
https://www.arm.gov/) to LES and global atmospheric models; or 2)
Developing a variable high-resolution global atmospheric model.
Further details of the position and applications may be found at
www.sandia.gov/careers and searching for posting 650858 under the 'View All
Jobs' tab.
