Background
The Met Office is leading a consortium that has been tasked by the European Commission to coordinate and support the wide range of earth system modelling and climate service activities that are evolving across Europe, and to some extent worldwide. The role of the Senior European Climate Service Coordinator is central to this task. You will work with a small team at the Met Office and our partners in 10 other European organisations to build an active network of climate scientists, funding bodies, climate service providers and users to improve synergies, reduce fragmentation and promote alignment between activities relating to earth system modelling and climate services. The European Commission will fund this work under contract. This is a challenging, exciting and strategically important opportunity, with high profile across Europe, enhancing our reputation.
Job Purpose
Working closely with the Head of Climate Service Development and the European Climate Service Manager, coordinate and support earth system modelling and climate service activities in Europe.
Job Responsibilities
* Help ensure that the European consortium successfully delivers the contractual requirements to the European Commission
* Actively engage with our European partners to coordinate and manage the consortium of leading European actors
* Closely engage with the European Commission and other stakeholders to build relationships
* Undertake internal and external communication activities, including writing reports, giving presentations, writing website content
* Organise and actively participate in external meetings, sometimes as Chairperson
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
1. High-level planning, organisational and time management skills demonstrated by a track record of delivery against deadlines, including the ability to be self-motivated and to use own initiative
2. Good understanding of climate science, earth system modelling and climate services, in the Met Office and beyond
3. Very good interpersonal skills with evidence of the ability to communicate with, and develop productive working relationships with, a range of external stakeholders in scientific and non-scientific organisations. In particular, be able to translate complex science issues into plain English understandable by a range of audiences
4. A PhD or equivalent postgrad experience in a physical science, mathematics or other related discipline.
5. Willing and able to travel overseas, particularly within Europe
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
1. Experience of collaborative project work with external groups, particularly in Europe
2. Experience in delivering presentations at international meetings
3. Good knowledge of some other European languages and cultures would be beneficial, but not essential

Salary Information
