Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Infrared Remote Sensing of the
Earth?s Atmosphere
Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP), Clarendon Laboratory,
Parks Road, Oxford
Grade 7: ?30,434 - ?37,394 p.a.
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in
infrared remote sensing of the Earth?s atmosphere. This project will
exploit data from the current IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding
Interferometer) instruments on the MetOp satellites, but also data from
recent and future instruments. The principal task will be to adapt the
MORSE Fortran software, developed for the MIPAS limb-viewing instrument,
to work for nadir-viewing geometry, including the handling of effects
such as surface topography and emissivity, and partial cloud-cover. The
postholder will develop IASI retrievals of temperature and composition
and support near real-time display of these results. It is expected the
postholder?s work will support and complement investigations into air
quality and climate change.
Applicants should possess or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in
physics or a related field and have a strong background in infrared
remote sensing and inverse methods. Previous research in atmospheric
science will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate
computing skills, including the knowledge of UNIX/Linux.
The postholder will be expected to represent the Earth Observation Data
Group and present results at national and international meetings. The
postholder will also have the opportunity to teach.
The post is initially fixed-term until 31 March 2017.
Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Dr Anu Dudhia
(Anu.Dudhia@physics.ox.ac.uk).
Only applications received via the Oxford University website
(<https://www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/index.html>) before 12.00 midday on
Monday 12 October 2015 can be considered. You will be required to upload
a brief statement of research interests, supporting statement, CV and
details of two referees as part of your online application.
