The meteorological research division of Environment Canada has an opening
for a three year postdoctoral fellowship. The postdoc will be based at the
Canadian meteorological center in Dorval (close to Montreal). The salary
will be between 60 000 to 65 000 CAN$.
The postdoc will work on the R&D of high resolution (~4 km) pan Arctic
ice-ocean short-term
forecasting systems. More specifically, the project will involve the
improvement
of air-ice and ice-ocean stress formulations by including the effect
of sea ice
morphology (i.e. the form drag). Forecasts with and without the form
drag parameterization will be compared to
observations of sea ice velocity. The impact of the form drag
parameterization on the distribution of
ice volume in the Arctic will also be investigated.
The applicant must have a PhD in meteorology, oceanography or in
physics. She/he also
has to be able to code in Fortran.

We aim to develop the next generation of statistical inference methods to analyze Earth Observation (EO) data.
Machine learning models have helped to monitor land, oceans, and atmosphere through the analysis and
estimation of climate and biophysical parameters. Current approaches, however, cannot deal efficiently with
the particular characteristics of remote sensing data. We will develop advanced regression (retrieval, model
inversion) methods to improve efficiency, prediction accuracy and uncertainties, encode physical knowledge
about the problem, attain self-explanatory models, learn graphical causal models to explain the complex
interactions between essential climate variables and observations, and discover hidden essential drivers and
confounding factors in Climate/Geo Sciences.
Highly motivated researchers with a degree/PhD in computer science, statistics, machine learning, electrical
engineering, physics, or mathematics are encouraged to apply. All candidates should have a solid understanding
and knowledge of machine learning and statistics, and being particularly interested in remote sensing and
geoscience problems. Positions will cover two different profiles: (1) Expertise in remote sensing and
geosciences: model inversion, radiative transfer models, biogeochemistry, climate science, detection and
attribution, global carbon/heat/water fluxes, in-situ datasets for land/vegetation monitoring; and (2)
Expertise in machine learning, statistics and signal processing: regression and time series analysis, change
and anomaly detection, structured/relational/transfer learning, graphical models and causal inference. In both
cases, good programming skills (Matlab/Python/R/C++), a critical and organized sense for data analysis, as
well as maturity and commitment, strong communication, presentation and writing skills are a big plus.

Qualifications:

A good understanding of aviation meteorology. Experience in aviation forecasting which meets the current CAeM Aviation Competency Assessment is desirable.
Minimum of three years experience as an operational forecaster.
Strong leadership skills and ability to train new meteorologists.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to effectively present on-air.
Experience in understanding of aviation meteorology.
Sharp analytical skills with a strong understanding of Australian weather patterns and forecasting.
Working knowledge of all primary weather forecasting models and analytical tools.

The Energy and Resources Group (ERG) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an Assistant Professor
position in quantitative environmental science, with an expected start date of July 1, 2016.
ERG has a long and distinguished history
of interdisciplinary research and teaching for a sustainable environment and an equitable society. Further information about ERG

Basic qualifications: The basic qualification for this position is completion of all Ph.D. or equivalent degree requirements, except
the dissertation, by time of application. Additional qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree by the appointment
start date.
Preferred qualifications: We are especially interested in candidates with quantitative expertise and interests in one or more of:
global change science; toxics and pollutants; the environment-society interface; and ecology and biodiversity. The ideal candidate
will have experience with some combination of: techniques for analysis of large data sets, mathematical modeling, methods in
complex systems theory, and experimental and observational field methods. ERG especially encourages applicants with a strong
interest in multiple scales of analysis from local to global. ERG is an interdisciplinary graduate program, so an ability to actively
engage with colleagues from other disciplines such as social science and engineering is desirable, as is a compelling interest and
engagement in public policy.
Training in multiple areas of the natural sciences (e.g., both physical and biological) is desirable.
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated potential for outstanding research and ongoing productivity. She or he will also have
strong teaching and mentoring skills, or for those without an extensive background in teaching, a commitment to make this a
core component of their professional portfolio. Teaching duties will include responsibility for a core ERG environmental science
course, as well as development of more specialized seminars or courses, and participation in interdisciplinary seminars with other
faculty.
ERG welcomes candidates who will bring to their research and teaching a perspective that comes from a non-traditional educational
background or understanding of the experiences of those underrepresented in higher education. UC Berkeley is committed
