Dear Colleagues,
We are currently advertising two PhD studentships based at the British Antarctic Survey, to start in October 2016.
1) Is ocean melting driving Larsen C Ice Shelf towards collapse? (with University of East Anglia) <http://www.enveast.ac.uk/projects/display/-/asset_publisher/G2PAL8zto56C/content/holland_ubas16ee>
2) The effect of Amundsen Sea freshwater on melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. (with University of Southampton) <http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs/project/effect-amundsen-sea-freshwater-melting-west-antarctic-ice-sheet>
Please bring these opportunities to the attention of any talented individuals that might be interested. Candidates must satisfy UK residency conditions to be eligible. I'm very happy to answer enquiries about the projects.

PhD position in Climatology
The group of Climatology of the Institute of Geography, University of
Bern, is offering a PhD position in the area of climate reconstruction
using data assimilation. The successful candidate will further develop
Kalman filter based numerical techniques for reconstructing climate over
the past 400 years by combining early instrumental data, documentary
data and tree-ring proxies with an ensemble of climate model simulations.
The candidate should have a strong basis in climate physics (MSc in
Environmental Sciences, Geography, Physics, or similar), should be
familiar with linear algebra problems, have experience in handling
large, gridded geophysical data sets (specifically climate model output
or reanalyses) and skills in data processing (Fortran, etc.) and
statistics (R or similar). Good English language skills are a prerequisite.
The successful candidate will participate in the PhD programme of the
Graduate School Climate Sciences, University of Bern, Switzerland
(<http://www.oeschger.unibe.ch>).
The position is for 36 months, the starting date is 1 Jan 2016. Please
send your application in the form of one pdf file (including application
letter, transcript, CV, publication list, names and addresses of three
referees). Review of applications will start on 1 November and continued
until the position is filled.

Open PhD Position
The Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is intensifying its experimental and theoretical research in the fields of cloud physics, and here in particular the dynamics of warm boundary layer clouds. In this context we are looking for a PhD student.
The position is located in the cloud group of TROPOS. The salary level is according to German public service regulation (65% TV-L 13). The deadline for applicants is November 30rd, 2015 or when the position is filled. Applicants should have a university degree in physics, meteorology or aerospace engineering with a strong background in atmospheric physics and cloud dynamics.
The main task of the successful candidate will be an extensive field campaign over the Azores with our helicopter-borne measurement payload ACTOS. This work includes some technical support during the planning phase, performing the experiment itself, analyzing the collected comprehensive data set, and publication of the gained result. The main scientific focus is on a detailed description of turbulent mixing at the top of stratocumulus clouds (entrainment). This project is embedded in an international effort. It is mandatory that the candidate is fluent in spoken and written English.
Though the focus of the project is on experimental work, candidate should be willing also to work on theoretical aspects. Knowledge of a high-level programming language for data analysis is required. Experiences regarding airborne measurements would be advantageous.
We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team, at one of the most renowned atmospheric research institutes and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany.
Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply.
Please send your application directly to me by ordinary mail or email (one pdf document).

Post-doctoral Fellowships x3: Climate Change Information for Regions
The Climate System Analysis Group (CSAG) <http://www.csag.uct.ac.za> is
expanding their post-doctoral team with three new appointments to work
collaboratively with a consortium of international partners on two new
interdisciplinary projects (see <http://www.fractal.org.za> and
<http://www.sasscal.org>). The positions are based in Cape Town, South
Africa.
The three post-doctoral fellowships are loosely focused around:
- Developing regional climate change information
- Changes in regional climate atmospheric processes
- Uptake of climate change information in decision making
Key foci of the projects include:
- Communication and translation of climate information informed by key
vulnerabilities of societal systems, especially at the scales of cities
and their co-dependent regions.
- Application, uptake and integration of climate information in decision
frameworks in cities.
- Methodologies to distill scale relevant and robust information from
multi-model multi-method climate projection data sets.
- Uncertainty, probability, likelihood and confidence in scale
appropriate climate information.
- Assessment of the co-behaviour of multi-scale climate process response
to anthropogenic forcing and natural variability.
Applicants should have received their PhDs within the last 5 years.
The value of the fellowship for recent graduates will be R250 000 / year
(tax free).
