The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary centre for Climate and Earth System research located in Hamburg, Germany, has a vacancy for a
Scientific Programmer (m/f) - Ref. MPIM-W012
to contribute to the development of a European Radiative Transfer Library in the context of the EC funded project ISENES2 (Infrastructure for the European Network for Earth System modelling Phase 2).
The successful applicant will help lead an initiative to develop a fast, efficient, and computationally well-structured radiative transfer library for use by Earth System Models. The development will be based on an existing radiative transfer code, and provide a common framework for its incorporation in different Earth System Models.
Requirements:
? A strong software engineering background
? Expertise in Fortran and/or C/C++, and object oriented programming concepts
? Familiarity with meteorology and/or radiative transfer
? Good communication skills, availability to travel and cooperate with code developments in partnering institutes in Paris and Exeter are necessary.
? A PhD is advantageous
Employment conditions
? The position is offered for 18 month starting at January 1, 2016 or later.
? Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
? The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

In ESiWACE we are looking for a
Scientific Programmer Workflow Environment
(m/f, Ref. MPIM-W013)
The project ESiWACE has received funding from the European Union?s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme grant agreement No 675191.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will improve our modeling environment for easier uptake and use by our scientists. You will support scientific excellence by provisioning access to IT environments for effective use of HPC and big data infrastructures, which allow scientists to more easily design and carry out simulation campaigns that seamlessly exploit the existing modelling framework, including the inherent value of model diversity. You will help improve the ease-of-use of the software, computing and data-handling infrastructure for our scientists from the applications through the software stack to the hardware. You will aid reducing the skills gaps for individual scientists by sharing best practice through worked examples using typical use-cases in the institute, and propose avenues for co-design of system software and architectures between industry and applications.
Qualifications / experience
? A university degree in scientific computing, computational sciences, data sciences or numerical geoinformatics or geosciences; a PhD is advantageous
? Advanced knowledge in software development with C, C++, Go, Java, Python and / or scripting languages; knowledge of Fortran a plus
? Rich experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems, good understanding of software installation and data management, preferably in a geo-scientific context; knowledge of the CDOs and similar tools a plus
? Knowledge, preferably in more than two, of the areas: Earth system modelling, numerical experiment design, high performance computing, grid computing, high-volume data analysis, data base design/applications, web frameworks / web services.
? Fluency in English is expected, plus fluency in one other EU language
? Good communication skills
For this position frequent international travel is required.

? The position is offered for two years starting at November 1, 2015 or later.
? Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
?
