Postdoc researcher on the Analysis of clustered and compounding weather extremes
Ministry of infrastructure and the environment/KNMI

In January 2012 strong winds resulted in very high water levels near the coast of Groningen. Persistent rainfall had occurred in the days prior to the event. This combination led to a hazardous situation, as it was impossible to drain the water into the Wadden Sea. Flooding threatened Groningen and dikes had to be broken to give more space to the water. This 'compound' event renewed discussion on the safety of the Netherlands to flooding and rising sea levels. The candidate will contribute to this challenging topic, by studying three aspects of extreme events that increase their impact (persistence, clustering and compound nature). Present-day occurrence and predictability, as well as possible future changes will be studied using existing data sets. Statistical methods will be combined with dynamical theories to expand our knowledge of such extreme events, focusing on the North Sea basin and countries which boarder the North Sea.

The research will be done in collaboration with external partners from Utrecht University and consultancy organisation HKV.
