Senior Scientific Software Engineer at the Met Office
The closing date is 18th Dec 2015. More information and details of how to apply can be found at: http://careers.metoffice.gov.uk/current-vacancies
Job Purpose
Data from climate models is a key input to enable progress in climate science. You will develop the systems that will get this data as efficiently as possible to the people who can make use of it. For example, the science behind the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) relies in great part on the comparison of results from the world's leading climate models, including the one used at the Met Office. This is just one of many projects that use our data dissemination system to prepare data for delivery to our partner organisation, the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC). You will initially be supported in this role by the existing owner of this system to develop a pivotal role in ensuring that the data we provide can be delivered by our scientists and transformed into the formats and variables required. You will become the architect and manager of the system, looking to improve efficiency to meet the ever-increasing demands of climate scientists in terms of data volumes (high resolution, massive ensembles), data and model complexity, and the wider application of the data, that is driven by our increased super-computing capacity.
The Person
You will have the background to be able to take on the role of system architect and have the organisational skills to oversee its development and operation, with some opportunity for hands-on software development. You will build a strong relationship with Met Office scientists, the team at BADC, and the international climate data community, helping shape the technology for future climate services.
Essential Criteria
In order to be considered for the role, you'll need to meet the following essential criteria:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent, at level 2.2 or above, in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject or equivalent experience
Have expertise in designing and developing complex processing systems using web and database technologies in a Linux Environment.
Have experience of software engineering disciplines that lead to high quality tools, for instance automated testing and configuration management.
Proven problem solving and analytical skills.
Have clear evidence of your ability to work in a team and take a technical leadership role.
Have clear evidence of your ability to build trusted relationships with scientists and technical teams in cross-organisational projects.
An ability to manage complex workflows
Desirable Criteria
If you possess any of the below desirable qualifications, then that's even better, but it is not a requirement. However if entering at Expert Scientific Software Engineer level, we would expect you to demonstrate the following:
Experience of taking a lead architect role in a significant science-focussed software development.
Experience in coordinating and participating in international technology development programmes.
Experience with some or all of the following specific technologies: python, database
design, web interfaces, scientific data formats, structured data transfer formats (xml, json, etc.), metadata use in data discovery and management, workflow systems.
Have an understanding of climate or a related science.
Allowances
Relocation assistance may be available.

Forwarded from CLIMLIST...
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening in its Climate
Change Science Institute (CCSI - <http://climatechangescience.ornl.gov/>)
for a senior research scientist in climate change impacts, adaptation,
and vulnerability (IAV). Depending on the successful candidate's
expertise, an affiliation with ORNL's Urban Dynamics Institute (UDI -
<http://udi.ornl.gov>) is also possible.
Institutes at ORNL bring together researchers from across the Lab to
focus on complex and novel interdisciplinary research projects. The CCSI
focus is on Earth system modeling, terrestrial ecosystem sciences,
environmental data management and informatics, and IAV research. The UDI
focus is on understanding complexity of urban systems governed by
physical and behavioral sciences. The CCSI and UDI collaborate closely
on research to better understand the implications of climate change for
conventional and renewable energy systems and critical infrastructure,
as well as human populations in urban settlements.
CCSI's IAV research extends beyond urban systems to computational
modeling of climate change impacts at the land/water/energy nexus
including supply and demand, trade-offs associated with alternative
development pathways, economic valuation, and evaluation of
opportunities for adaptation. This includes place-based research as well
research with regional, national, or international scope that integrates
with other CCSI and UDI research capabilities and strategic priorities.
We are looking for a nationally and internationally recognized thought
leader to help lead and grow ORNL's IAV research portfolio. The
successful candidate will have the opportunity to draw upon the
substantial expertise and tools available at the CCSI, UDI, and the Lab;
including one of the fastest and most capable supercomputers in the
world; world-class climate, population, and urban dynamic models;
sophisticated data management and visualization tools; and an
exceptional research collaboration environment.
For further details on this position please contact Peter Thornton
(<thorntonpe@ornl.gov>), or see the position announcement online at
<https://www.ornl.gov/ornl/careers> (select "View Open Positions", and use

Northwestern University's Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences<http://www.earth.northwestern.edu/> (DEPS) is seeking postdoctoral scholars to join the newly minted Climate Change Research Group<http://sites.northwestern.edu/danethan/> (CCRG). The CCRG studies the interaction of Earth's climate system with an array of subjects across diverse spatiotemporal scales. Broad thematic interests include: the detection and attribution of recent climatic change, the near-term meteorological, societal, and public health impacts of anthropogenic climate change, and the evolution of Earth's climate system through geologic time. To address this diversity of topics the group employs a wide-range of research tools including numerical models, environmental observations, statistical analyses, and machine learning techniques. Computing resources from Northwestern's QUEST High Performance Computing Cluster support in-house numerical modeling and analysis efforts.
Appointed scholars will be encouraged to build innovative research collaborations with CCRG members, DEPS faculty, and the University at large. Positional funding is unrestricted by topic, as such intellectually creative proposals with an intra- or inter-disciplinary flavor are encouraged. Interested applicants should email their CV, a brief (maximum 1 page) summary of research interests, and questions to Daniel Horton (danethan@earth.northwestern.edu<mailto:danethan@earth.northwestern.edu>). Applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
