Northumbria University, Newcastle is now in the UK top 50 for research

assessment of research quality in UK universities. To further strengthen
our world-leading research areas we are investing to develop exciting
opportunities in multidisciplinary research.
The Extreme Environments multidisciplinary research theme is a
university wide initiative which draws together ground-breaking research
in understanding and harnessing physical and biological environments
that operate under extreme conditions, such as those found in the
Earth's surface, subsurface, oceans, atmosphere and in the solar system.
Theme expertise ranges from the geophysical exploration of Antarctic
subglacial lakes, responses of glaciers, snow cover and permafrost to
climate change through the investigation of nonlinear waves, the
Sun-Earth connection, solar physics and space weather, to the
reconstruction of past extreme climates using ocean cores, speleothems
and pollen records.
We seek to appoint high calibre individuals at Professorial and Reader
level with an excellent international reputation in any of the research
areas relevant to the Extreme Environments multidisciplinary research
theme. You will be based in the Department of Mathematics & Information
Sciences or the Department of Geography as appropriate to your
disciplinary strengths. You will drive and enhance the highest quality
research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities and actively encourage
this amongst colleagues. The Departments have particular strengths in
solar physics, computer science, environmental geochemistry &
microbiology, mathematics, cold and palaeoenvironments, physics and
statistics. Candidates with expertise in any of these research areas are
welcome to apply, and we will consider high quality applicants in any
fields of research relevant to the Extreme Environments theme.
You must hold a first degree and be qualified to Doctoral level in a
relevant discipline and have leading subject expertise and specialist
knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or
consultancy. Proven ability to deliver high quality research led
teaching within an appropriate field and a publication profile
commensurate with the post of Professor/Reader are essential.

A Scientific Programmer position is available in the Earth and
Environmental Systems Institute at the Pennsylvania State University.
Successful candidates will become part of an interdisciplinary research
network on Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM, scrimhub.org).
Centered at Penn State and linking 18 universities and five research
institutions in six nations, SCRiM addresses the question: *What are
sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically
efficient, and ethically defensible climate-risk management strategies?*
SCRiM catalyzes fundamental, mission-oriented, and transdisciplinary
research to characterize climate risks and trade-offs associated with risk
management instruments such as mitigation, adaptation, and geoengineering.
The network provides unique opportunities for research, education,
outreach, decision support, and professional development. SCRiM postdocs
enjoy ample opportunities for transdisciplinary research collaboration as
well as professional mentoring by a team of experts in relevant disciplines.
The selected candidate will work with SCRiM project teams to develop
modeling, analysis, visualization, decision support, and educational tools.
Desired areas of expertise include models of Earth system components,
geophysical data visualization, statistical analysis of large datasets,
optimization techniques, and development of web-based graphical user
interfaces. The primary common language used within SCRiM is R but
experience with additional languages such as Fortran, C/C++, Julia, Matlab,
NCL, and/or Python would also be highly desirable. Initial projects may
include (but are not limited to) development of a graphical user interface
for a simple integrated assessment model, development of a data
visualization portal for downscaled climate data, and coupling of model
components (originally developed for different disciplinary domains) for
multi- objective trade-off analyses in a high-performance computational
environment.
