*Postdoctoral Research Associate*Earth System Analysis to Inform Decision
Making

Earth and Environmental Systems Institute
The Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Earth and
Environmental Systems Institute at the Pennsylvania State University.
Successful candidates will become part of an interdisciplinary research
network on Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM, scrimhub.org).
Centered at Penn State and linking 18 universities and five research
institutions in six nations, SCRiM addresses the question: *What are
sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically
efficient, and ethically defensible climate-risk management strategies?* SCRiM
catalyzes fundamental, mission-oriented, and transdisciplinary research to
characterize climate risks and trade-offs associated with risk management
instruments such as mitigation, adaptation, and geoengineering. The network
provides unique opportunities for research, education, outreach, decision
support, and professional development. SCRiM postdocs enjoy ample
opportunities for transdisciplinary research collaboration as well as
professional mentoring by a team of experts in relevant disciplines.

The successful candidate will join an transdisciplinary research team that
analyzes two main questions: (i) How can paleoclimatic and instrumental
records improve our mechanistic understanding of the climate system and
inform climate predictions? (ii) How can this scientific information be
used to improve the design of climate-risk management strategies? The ideal
candidate will have a strong quantitative background (e.g., applied
mathematics, Bayesian statistics, or physics) and some prior exposure to
Earth system science. The candidate will have considerable freedom to
collaboratively design the research within the scope of the broad questions
outlined above. Possible example projects include the analysis of current
uncertainties surrounding climate projections, strategies on how to reduce
these uncertainties, and how to design robust climate change mitigation and
adaptation strategies in the face of deep uncertainty and learning.
For more information please contact Dr. Klaus Keller (klaus@psu.edu). To
apply, visit *https://psu.jobs/job/59660 <https://psu.jobs/job/59660>*.
Please include a letter of interest, a CV, and contact information for
three references with your application.

Ladder Faculty Search in Atmospheric Chemistry

The UCLA Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) and the Institute of the
Environment and Sustainability (IOES) jointly seek candidates for a ladder faculty position in the
broad area of atmospheric chemistry. We are particularly interested in candidates who are
committed to advancing development of atmospheric chemistry/air quality models and their
applications. Candidates with focus on measurements in the field or laboratory are also encouraged
to apply. Candidates should have a strong interest in applying models/measurements to study
environmental issues. Examples include, but are not limited to, climate change due to air pollution,
exposure/human health, atmospheric responses to changes in energy infrastructure, and/or other
similar topics. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential to conduct exceptional research
and excellence in teaching. In addition, she or he will show a clear commitment to enhancing the
diversity of AOS and IOES faculty members, graduate student population, and majors within the
field. The appointment can be made at any level of seniority. The position will be 50% in each
department.

The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree at the time of appointment and
will be expected to lead or develop a first rate program of research in Atmospheric Chemistry. He or
she will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of AOS and IOES, at both the graduate
and undergraduate levels. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The target
start date is on or after July 1, 2016.

Please submit your online application to the Search Committee for a faculty position in Atmospheric
Chemistry at https://recruit.apo.ucla.edu/apply/JPF01871. Please include: (1) curriculum vitae; (2)
cover letter; (3) a statement of teaching; (4) a statement of research; and (5) a list of 3-5 individuals
who are familiar with your work and can serve as references.

Applications are due by January 31, 2016, but the position will remain open until filled. The
University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants
will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status. For the
complete University of California nondiscrimination and affirmative action policy please follow this

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Infrared Remote Sensing of the
Earth's Atmosphere

Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP), Clarendon Laboratory,
Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £30,434 - £37,394 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in
infrared remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere. This project will
exploit data from the current IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding
Interferometer) instruments on the MetOp satellites, but also data from
recent and future instruments. The principal task will be to adapt the
MORSE Fortran software, developed for the MIPAS limb-viewing instrument,
to work for nadir-viewing geometry, including the handling of effects
such as surface topography and emissivity, and partial cloud-cover. The
postholder will develop IASI retrievals of temperature and composition
and support near real-time display of these results. It is expected the
postholder's work will support and complement investigations into air
quality and climate change.

Applicants should possess or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in
physics or a related field and have a strong background in infrared
remote sensing and inverse methods. Previous research in atmospheric
science will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate
computing skills, including the knowledge of UNIX/Linux.

The postholder will be expected to represent the Earth Observation Data
Group and present results at national and international meetings. The
postholder will also have the opportunity to teach.

The post is initially fixed-term until 31 March 2017.

Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Dr Anu Dudhia
(Anu.Dudhia@physics.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received via the Oxford University website
(<https://www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/index.html>) before 12.00 midday on
Monday 4 January 2015 can be considered. You will be required to upload
a brief statement of research interests, supporting statement, CV and
details of two referees as part of your online application.
