Dear Colleagues,

The Centre for Water Resource Systems at Vienna University of Technology
announces competition for the third intake of doctoral candidates for the
Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems. The programme is anticipated
to host a total of 70 doctoral students over a period of 12 years. This is a
dedicated programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) that promotes
doctoral research and education at the highest standards and provides
excellent opportunities for cross-disciplinary research. International
networking is facilitated by a mobility programme with a spectrum of
attractive international partner institutions and a comprehensive guest
scientist programme.
Seven PhD student positions are available in the following research themes
related to Water Resource Systems:
• Flood-hydrology
• Environmental economics
• Aquatic microbiology
• Environmental engineering
• Micro-meteorology
• Soil moisture remote sensing
• Socio-hydrology
• Mechanics of structures

Applicants for the PhD student positions must have a Master's degree (or
equivalent) preferably related to water resource systems. The working
language of the programme is English. Students are expected to work across
disciplines and in cooperation with others. A capacity and willingness to
integrate and collaborate is essential.
The Programme provides a salary according to the FWF scheme (approx. EUR
20000/year net), together with health and social security benefits. There is
also significant allowance for travel and research support. TU Wien is an
equal opportunities employer. The preferred starting date is Oct. 1, 2016.

Candidates should send a letter of application, a statement of research
interests, a Curriculum Vitae, and copies of education certificates
including transcripts of grades as a single .pdf file to:
office@waterresources.at.

Application deadline is April 30, 2016. Short listed candidates will be
invited to a selection seminar. Financial support towards travel expenses is
available on request.

Details on the Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems and further
information on the positions may be viewed at http://waterresources.at

Please forward this announcement to your colleagues and masters students who
may be interested in the opportunity.

Many thanks,
Gemma Carr

NASA student research assistantship at California State University, Los
Angeles

The department of Geosciences and Environment at the Cal State LA has
research assistant positions open for graduate students who are
interested in working on thesis in areas of climate, remote sensing,
hydrology, and related areas starting fall 2016.

This NASA grant is to establish a Data Intensive Research and Education
Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (DIRECT-STEM) at
the Cal State LA.It trains STEM students with research skills in
computation and data mining through their course works and hands-on
research experience including a thesis.

The scholarship offers up to $12000 annual stipend, plus 1 summer paid
internship of $8000 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at the
Pasadena, a few miles north of the campus.

Cal State LA is located on the east of the City of the Los Angeles
(<http://www.calstatela.edu>).The department of Geosciences and
Environment at Cal State LA offers master degrees in geography, geology,
and environmental sciences (with GIS option and hydrology). The two NASA
affiliate faculty members are Dr. Hengchun Ye (Climatology,
hydroclimatology, Climate change), and Dr. Jingjing Li (Hydrology,
remote sensing, GIS).

We strongly encourage under-represented students, including minorities,
female, veteran, and students with disability to apply. The minimum
requirements are US citizen and GPA 3.0 or higher (required for NASA
internship).

Interested students may contact Dr. Ye (hye2@calstatela.edu

PhD Position in Ocean Turbulence, Waves, and Air-Sea Fluxes
-----------------------------------------------------------

The upper few meters of the ocean form a critical layer for air-sea
interaction, but due to observational challenges this region is
under-sampled. However, the physical processes controlling momentum
transfer, gas exchange, and heat transfer are all concentrated in the
uppermost region of the ocean, but we still lack the knowledge to
adequately describe the coupled ocean-atmosphere system within our
global models. The understanding of the small scale processes
is therefore important for accurate weather and climate predictions.

This PhD position will utilise the data from the Air-Sea Interaction
Profiler (ASIP - an autonomous instrument capable of making ascending
pro files of microstructure) in combination with wave spectra and
air-sea flux measurements.

Candidates should have a degree in oceanography, physics, engineering,
or a closely-related discipline, and a strong motivation for research.

Applications (curriculum vitae, academic degree, references) should be
sent by e-mail to Dr. Brian Ward (bward@nuigalway.ie).

A fixed stipend of €15,000 per year is available and tuition fees will
be covered.
