This research position is part of the NERC collaborative Project CLARIFY (CLoud-Aerosol-Radiation Interactions and Forcing). CLARIFY involves the universities of Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Reading, Oxford and the Met Office. The overall objective of CLARIFY is to use the natural laboratory of the southeast Atlantic to improve our understanding of aerosol-radiation and aerosol-cloud interaction processes and their impacts on local, regional and global weather and climate. CLARIFY involves an intensive airborne field campaign in 2016 with supporting surface and satellite measurements over the southeast Atlantic. The measurements will be used to develop improved models at different spatial scales from the cloud scale to the global scale that couple aerosols, clouds and radiation.
The research fellow post in Leeds focuses on modelling aerosol-cloud interactions. The research will exploit a new version of the Met Office Unified Model that couples aerosol and cloud microphysics embedded at regional scales with resolutions of <1 km within the global model. The model will be used, together with new measurements, to understand how climatically important shallow clouds respond to changes in aerosols, including biomass burning.
The Leeds research project is led by Professor Ken Carslaw, Professor Paul Field and Professor Alan Blyth. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in close cooperation with scientists at the Met Office, supported by Professor Field who has a joint position between the University of Leeds and the Met Office.
You will have a PhD (or be close to obtaining) and experience in a relevant area of atmospheric modelling. Experience of developing and running complex numerical models is also essential. You will be able to demonstrate commitment to publication of original results at an international level.

Applications are invited for a two-year post-doctoral research associate
position funded through the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, in the
atmospheric chemistry modelling research groups of Dr Alex Archibald and
Prof John Pyle. The focus of our research is how changes in atmospheric
composition affect the Earth System, and vice versa. Our principal research
tool is UM-UKCA, a chemistry-aerosol and climate model integrated into the
Met Office Unified Model. Ongoing projects include studies of how the
stratospheric ozone layer will recover, how changes in natural and
anthropogenic emissions affect tropospheric ozone and tropospheric
oxidation processes, and how these changes interact with changes in climate.
We are looking for a highly motivated, technically proficient, physical
scientist with a good track record at problem solving using numerical
models. The successful candidate will be engaged in both the development of
extended functionality to simulate important physical processes and leading
their own research projects. You will be working as part of a team of
researchers helping to develop and exploit UM-UKCA but you must have
sufficient time management skills to work independently on a day-to-day
basis.
Applicants must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in the physical sciences
(or other relevant area); desirable fields of study include atmospheric
science, aerosol science, ocean science, computational mathematics and
physics. Experience with the Unified Model or atmospheric modelling is
desirable. Experience interpreting large model datasets or observational
datasets using software such as Python, R or Matlab and experience running
computer code on HPC is essential.
The post is available from the 1st May. Interviews will take place week
beginning 11th April 2016.

Risk Management Solutions (RMS) is the world's leading provider of mathematical models and information related to the financial impact of natural catastrophes. We have a team of fifty PhD scientists and engineers based in London building mathematical models that predict the distributions of possible damage due to the effects of tropical storms, extra-tropical storms, thunderstorms, storm-surges, freshwater floods and tsunamis. We use a combination of observed data, reanalysis data, numerical, statistical and engineering models and data assimilation. We are the pioneers in the development and application of complex statistical and numerical modelling methods for the quantification of natural hazard risk, and our risk models are the most detailed and comprehensive models of natural catastrophes produced anywhere in the world. Our clients include several hundred insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers, banks, hedge funds, regional and local governments, and multilateral agencies.
We are currently trying to fill a 10-week summer internship position in our modelling team, to work on quantifying variations in European winter storms, hurricanes and their impact on insurance losses. Suitable candidates would already have, or be half way through, a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Wind Engineering, or similar. They would be used to programming in a UNIX or Linux environment. Strong candidates with a different but equivalent profile would also be considered. Previous experience in catastrophe modeling, or specific expertise in modelling natural hazards, is not necessary.

research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography,
geology and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to
scientific goals.
The department of Glaciology invites applications for a position as
PostDoc, paleo-climate proxies in ice cores
Tasks:
The position encompasses the implementation of instruments, the
measurement and analysis of paleo-proxy- data from snow, firn and ice
cores. It is embedded in the framework of topic 8 "Abrupt climate change
from proxy-data" of the Helmholtz Regional Climate Initiative (REKLIM:
www.reklim.de) and therefore offers the great possibility for working in
an interdisciplinary environment.
You will be involved in the adaption of our Continuous Flow Analysis
(CFA) device to enable high-resolution measurements of ions and stable
water isotopes. You will carry out measurements on firn and shallow ice
cores from Northern Greenland. The analysis will be in close
collaboration with (paleo) - climate modellers as well as with REKLIM
partners specialised in other climate archives.
Your analysis will provide an excellent basis to understand Arctic
climate variability over the last millennium and how this variability is
reflected in the accumulation and deposition patterns in firn and ice
cores. We will establish an independent dating and access the
seasonality of snow accumulation with respect to the interpretation of
paleo-proxies from ice cores.
Requirements:
We are looking for candidates who have a technical record to take care
of the adaption of the CFA device, the motivation to measure and analyse
the firn and ice core data and experience in paleo proxy analysis. We
expect:
• A PhD in glaciology, physics, geology, chemistry, meteorology, or
closely related environmental science disciplines and ideally a strong
background in paleo-climate
• Experience with methodological development, LabView programming and
time series analysis
• The ability to present the results at international conferences and
to publish in peer-reviewed journals
• Proficiency in the English language in written and oral form is
mandatory
The contract will be limited for 3 years. Payment will be in accordance
with a civil service position (TVöD Bund) based on qualifications and

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary
centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an
internationally recognized reputation in climate modelling. The MPI-M is

Within the Horizon 2020 funded project PRIMAVERA (Process-based climate
simulation: Advances in high-resolution modelling and risk assessment),
the department for The Ocean in the Earth System (Director's research
group), we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, Ref. MPIM-W022)
for working on improved parameterizations of internal mixing in ocean
models.
The project PRIMAVERA has received funding from the European Union's
Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme grant agreement No 641727.
Responsibilities
The objective of this position is to evaluate and improve the
representation of internal mixing processes in the ocean with specific
emphasis on processes, which act to modify the mixed layer structure.
The researcher recruited for this position will:
·Design and carry out the implementation of a novel vertical mixing
scheme into a state-of-the-art ocean general circulation model.
·Study the effects of mixing generated by near-inertial waves and
internal waves.
·Assess the benefits of improved ocean mixing representation for coupled
climate model simulations.
·Contribute to project and sub-task coordination.
·Disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals
and presentations at conferences.
He/she will be part of an international research team based at
universities and research centers throughout Europe, and is expected to
attend training, coordination, and dissemination activities that are
organized by PRIMAVERA.
Qualifications / experience
·A PhD in Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, or Mathematics is required
for this position.
·Very good knowledge in oceanic processes and their representation in
ocean models.
·Excellent programming skills in FORTRAN and statistical post-processing
and visualization software (e.g. FERRET, NCL, MATLAB).
·Experience in modeling geophysical fluid dynamics and analyzing climate
model simulations with emphasis on ocean processes and atmosphere-ocean
interaction.
·Ability to coordinate cross-institutional research work and reporting
tasks.
