*-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four-year PhD position in high-resolution atmosphere-ice-ocean modelling
available at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*
Within the project "Influence of small-scale processes on the dynamics
of the coupled atmosphere-cryosphere-ocean system on daily to seasonal
timescales in the region of Adélie Land, Antarctica" funded by the
Belgian Fund for Scientific Research - FNRS, the Georges Lemaître Centre
for Earth and Climate Research (www.uclouvain.be/teclim) of the
Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium is
seeking a PhD student for 4 years.

The overall objective of this project, which will be carried out in
close collaboration with the Laboratory of Climatology of the Université
de Liège (ULg) and several research institutes based in France, is to
quantify the influence of small-scale processes on the dynamics of the
coupled atmosphere-cryosphere-ocean system on daily-to-seasonal
timescales in the Antarctic region. To reach this goal, a
high-resolution coupled atmosphere-cryosphere-ocean model will be
developed and applied to the Adélie Land area. The model will consist of
the regional climate model MAR (Modèle Atmosphérique Régional) running
at a 4-km horizontal resolution coupled to an updated version of the sea
ice-ocean model NEMO-LIM3 (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean -
Louvain-la-Neuve sea ice model, version 3) with a 2-km horizontal
resolution. Several simulations will be performed over two seasonal
cycles to evaluate the impacts of the high spatial and temporal
resolution, explicit treatment of small-scale processes usually
neglected or highly parameterized in global climate models (polar cloud
microphysics, blowing snow, ocean tides, ice shelf-ocean interactions,
ocean mixing/convection, landfast sea ice, and sea ice rheology), and
coupling on the sea ice characteristics (including coastal polynyas),
the air-ice-ocean interactions, and the surface mass balance of the
Antarctic ice sheet. The effect of initial conditions on the model
prediction skill will also be assessed, as a first step towards the
application of the model to operational purposes. All this work will be
conducted within the World Weather Research Programme Year of Polar
Prediction (www.polarprediction.net/yopp.html).

We envisage four main tasks for the UCL PhD student:

1. NEMO-LIM3 set-up and validation in the Adélie Land region;
2. coupling of MAR with NEMO-LIM3 and coupled model validation (to be
performed in collaboration with the ULg PhD student);
3. study of the effects of small-scale sea ice and ocean processes on
the coupled system dynamics;
4. study of the influence of initial conditions on the coupled model
prediction skill (to be performed in collaboration with the ULg PhD
student).

We are looking for candidates who hold a Master degree (5 years) in
physical climatology, oceanography or glaciology and have some expertise
in numerical modelling.

The PhD position is for 4 years, starting on October 1st, 2016, with a
net monthly salary of about 1850 EUR. This includes social insurances.

Applicants should send (i) a statement of interest, (ii) a complete CV
and (iii) contact information for two references via e-mail to Prof.
Thierry Fichefet (thierry.fichefet@uclouvain.be).

Application Deadline Approaching for

2017 Scientist in Residency Fellowship Awards

at the Sitka Sound Science Center

- Polar and Subarctic Scientists of All Disciplines -

March 21, 2016: There are only ten days left in the application period
for 2017 Polar Scientist in Residency Fellowships (PSIRF) at the Sitka
Sound Science Center in Sitka, Alaska! This program, funded by the
National Science Foundation to attract pre-eminent polar and subarctic
scientists to Sitka, offers several one month-long fellowships for polar
and subarctic scientists each year. Expenses for travel, one month of
lodging, per diem and a small honorarium will be provided to each fellow.

PSIRF is limited to US Citizens and is intended for mid-career
scientists (not graduate students). Scientists live on the Sheldon
Jackson Campus, now owned and operated by the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and
are provided office and laboratory space at the Science Center. The
short sabbatical will allow scientists undisturbed time that can be used
in a variety of ways: data analysis, manuscript preparation,
experimentation, collaboration, or simply thoughtful process. At the
same time, Fellows will learn what Sitka has to offer researchers in
terms of logistical support, research opportunities and resources.

PSIRF Fellows will spend a week of their residency in outreach and
education activities to share their work in local schools and through
other community forums, such as public library programs, radio programs,
and science cafes. They will give a lecture to the general community
through the Natural History Seminar series supported by the Sitka
Charitable Trust and the University of Alaska Southeast. Fellows will
also be provided guidance on best practices for communicating science to
a public audience in rural Alaska.

The five year NSF award is from the Office of Polar Programs. UAS
Associate Professor Jan Straley is the Principal Investigator for the
project. Lauren Bell is the Director of the program. Applications and
further information is available at the SSSC website
www.sitkascience.org/SIRF <http://www.sitkascience.org/SIRF>

Deadline for application is April 1, 2016

Postdoc on clouds and deep palaeoclimate, University of Victoria,
British Columbia.

I'm seeking a postdoc to work on physically motivated, testable
hypotheses for how clouds will have changed Earth's energy balance in
deep palaeoclimate problems. Here is the problem: the solar constant has
increased thirty percent over Earth history, but paradoxically, glacial
climates (like now) are somewhat rare. Many aspects of the
(palaeo)climate system were different: greenhouse gas inventories were
higher, surface pressure was different (but we don't know how), ozone
only made an appearance half way though Earth's lifetime and the planet
spun faster. A rather different energy budget is called for, with less
solar heating of the surface, more back-radiation, lower latent heat
flux and (one might guess) different tropospheric stability. Parameter
space exploration shows the leverage that clouds can have
(doi:10.5194/cp-7-203-2011), but now the time has come to study the
problem systematically in more capable models.

You have (or will soon have) a PhD in atmospheric science or similar,
with experience running general circulation models, cloud resolving
models or other useful tool to this problem. You want to work on a fun
problem that will make you think outside the box of modern climate. You
want to develop your own ideas about deep palaeoclimate, atmospheric
evolution or astrobiology (which you can have time to work on). Stipend
of $45,000 for a two-year term. Victoria is the provincial capital of
BC. Our campus is a 15 minute walk from the beach, in a beautiful
coastal/mountain environment in the Pacific Northwest.

Contact Colin Goldblatt (<czg@uvic.ca>) to apply. Send a one page letter
about telling me why you are interested and what makes you qualified,
your CV and the contact details of two people who will write references
for you, all in one pdf file. Do this by April 6th for full
consideration (open until I find someone awesome!). Information on what
else happens in my group is at <www.colingoldblatt.net>.
