The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and its Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research - Atmospheric Environmental Research (KIT/IMK-IFU), KIT-Campus Alpin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, invites applications to an open PostDoc position.

The positions are within the KIT/IMK-IFU's group "Transport processes in the Atmospheric Boundary-Layer" and contribute to the BMBF-funded project "Model-based city planning and application in climate change (MOSAIK)", while the focus of this sub-project in on urban chemistry and air quality. We offer a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research environment with excellent research infrastructure and support, well connected to national and international programmes.

Salary and benefits will be according to the Collective Agreements for state employees (TV-L).
Appointment is for a period of three years. The preferred starting date is 1 June 2016.

The main goal of this work will be the development and evaluation of an online-coupled chemistry module for a large-eddy urban climate model. Further expected tasks include mentoring of PhD students, publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences. Professional requirements are a PhD degree (or equivalent) in meteorology, atmospheric science, physics, chemistry, environmental science or engineering, or a related field, basic knowledge in atmospheric chemistry, numerical modelling and proficiency in FORTRAN. An inclination for cross-disciplinary collaboration and proven ability to write scientific publications are expected.

*Two PhD projects on drought at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia*

Seeking motivated students to work on two projects associated with drought.

*Project 1: Local climate processes related to variations in drought risk*
The project will examine the atmospheric and land surface processes
associated with decadal-scale variability in seasonal-scale drought risk in
Australia and elsewhere. Local atmospheric and land surface processes and
large-scale teleconnection patterns will be examined and compared between
observations and climate model simulations.

*Project 2: The simulation of megadrought risk in climate models*
This project will examine the ability of climate models to simulate
megadrought risk in Australia. The project will include characterising
megadrought in coupled climate models, identifying systematic biases
and determining links to large scale ocean-atmosphere processes.

Applicants must have a very strong academic track record including an
Honours Class I or equivalent. Graduates with a background in atmospheric
science, climatology, oceanography, physics, mathematics or engineering are
particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should send an expression of interest to ailie.gallant@monash.edu
containing:
1. CV
2. Academic transcripts
3. Copies of any publications
4. A short statement outlining why you are interested in this research
project

If your expression of interest is accepted you will then be encouraged to
complete the official Monash University scholarship application process.

Applications close 15 May, 2016

Further enquires about the project should be directed to
ailie.gallant@monash.edu

Dear Met-jobs members

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD Studentship linked to the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) Doctoral Training initiative. Specifically, the student working on this project will develop a low-cost, high-resolution, adaptive air quality network for health analyses. This project draws on our research expertise at Brunel on atmospheric science, Big Data analyses and environmental monitoring.

The studentship is for UK residents only and includes tuition fees and a tax-free stipend (£14,384 per year) for 3.5 years. We would like the student to start at Brunel in October 2016.

Within the NCAS Doctoral Training initiative, the student will receive focussed training via summer schools and short courses. This is on top of the specific project supervision and training from Brunel. The student will also engage with the NERC London Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) training scheme for relevant topics.
