Extremes Modeling Research Scientist-82275
Organization:CE-Climate & Ecosystems
Berkeley Lab is Bringing Science Solutions to the World, and YOU can be a part of it!
In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is synonymous with "excellence." That's why we hire the best - whether in research, science or operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your top-notch skills to bear in support of world-class scientific research that addresses national and global challenges!
Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab's Climate & Ecosystems Sciences Division has an opening for a Extremes Modeling Research Scientist. We seek an interdisciplinary scientist with expertise and interests in a broad array of fundamental and applied atmospheric science. The position calls for an individual with expertise in extreme climate processes, climate modeling, and the interaction between extremes and the hydrologic cycle. You will focus on systematically improving our understanding of extreme climate phenomena and their drivers, including anthropogenic influences. The work will focus on several important types of hydrologically-relevant extremes, including tropical cyclones, extratropical cyclones, floods, and droughts. The goal of this position is to build fundamental understanding of the processes that control these phenomena, and how they interact with the hydrologic cycle, in order to improve confidence in long-term projections of the hydrologic cycle. The position entails using a combination of theory; high-resolution, state of the science models; and observational data (e.g., in situ and satellite) in order to improve process-level understanding of extremes and to develop strategies for reducing uncertainty in extremes--possibly by improving their representation—in climate model projections. The Research Scientist will engage a wide array of collaborators to develop a research portfolio that is simultaneously scientifically-novel and also decision-relevant, especially in relation to water-energy infrastructure in both the western and eastern United States.
This is an excellent environment for working with a highly skilled, interdisciplinary team in the Climate Sciences Department. Berkeley Lab is a renowned center of scientific expertise in many facets of climate-related fundamental and applied science.
What You Will Do:
• Analyze hydrometeorological extremes simulated by state-of-the-science climate models.
• Evaluate the interaction among natural variability, anthropogenic influences, and extremes.
• Author technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.
• Work collaboratively in a large multidisciplinary research team.
• Successfully contribute to an active intellectual environment.
Additional Desired Responsibilities:
• Actively engage stakeholders to develop a decision-relevant research portfolio.
• Determine the sensitivity of model fidelity to key aspects of the model's numerical implementation.
What Is Required:
• Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, applied mathematics, environmental engineering science, or a closely related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Expertise in climate dynamics, including hydroclimate processes or synoptic climate patterns
• Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive analyses making use of different subsets of simulations, evaluation datasets, and advanced analysis techniques.
• Demonstrated proficiency with one or more programming languages (especially Python and/or Fortran.)
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Research experience connecting natural variability, anthropogenic influences, and extremes.
Proficiency in designing and executing climate model simulations to test complex hypotheses.
The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on May 15, 2016.
Notes: This is a 1 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Salary is commensurate with experience.
This position requires completion of a background check.

This EPSRC-funded CASE PhD project will design and build a laboratory
demonstrator of a compact spectrometer with the sensitivity to observe
variations in column atmospheric methane. This project is in
collaboration with scientists and engineers at the University of
Edinburgh and the STFC/Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh.
We are looking for a UK graduate in physics or engineering. The project
will start in Autumn 2016.
