The research group "Climate and Water Cycle" led by Prof. Christoph Schär (http://www.iac.ethz.ch/groups/schaer) at ETH Zürich is offering
Two PhD positions in Regional Climate Modeling
The aim of our research is to better understand the role of the water cycle in a changing climate, and to improve the predictive power of climate models. The two PhD positions will be devoted to regional climate modeling at hydrostatic to convection-resolving resolutions (25 - 2 km grid spacing). The targeted work includes extended climate simulations, statistical analysis, interpretation of results using physical and meteorological principles, and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals. The specific objectives of the two PhDs are related to the roles of atmospheric convection and large-scale circulation in a changing climate, mainly focusing on the European summer season. The positions are embedded in an experienced research team, provide access to high-performance computing systems, and are linked to ongoing international and national initiatives (e.g. EURO-CORDEX http://wcrp-cordex.ipsl.jussieu.fr<http://wcrp-cordex.ipsl.jussieu.fr/>, crCLIM http://www.c2sm.ethz.ch/research/crCLIM).
We are looking for two independent, result-oriented persons with the ability to work well in a team. Requirements include: an education in atmospheric or climate sciences or a related discipline (e.g. environmental sciences, physics, computational sciences), thorough experience in programming, a solid background in mathematics and ideally in data analysis, proficient writing skills in English, and good communication skills.

We offer an attractive research environment at a leading climate research institute, excellent infrastructure, interesting activities in a young and ambitious research team, and a friendly working atmosphere. The ideal starting date for these positions is late summer or early autumn 2016. The positions are for a period of three years. For further information, please contact Dr. Nikolina Ban nikolina.ban@env.ethz.ch<mailto:nikolina.ban@env.ethz.ch> and/or Dr. Silje Soerland silje.soerland@env.ethz.ch<mailto:silje.soerland@env.ethz.ch>.
Please submit your application online including a cover letter explaining your motivation, a CV, transcripts of academic records, names and contact details of two references (as PDF files) with attention to ETH Zurich, Mr Olivier Meyrat, Human Resources. The evaluation of applications will start on May 26 and proceed until the positions are filled.

Successful candidates will benefit from a personalised training programme, combining bespoke specialist training with cohort activities, including the NexUSS "Smart and Autonomous Observation Systems (SAOS) Grand Challenge", in which will students will work in teams to design and deploy SAOS technologies and apply rigorous data analysis techniques to address a simulated, real-world environmental problem.

The three projects are:
Optimising ocean glider sampling of internal waves and eddies (Primary supervisor Dr Robert Hall, UEA)
Autonomous carbon system observations from gliders (AutoCarb) (Primary supervisor Prof Jan Kaiser, UEA)
A coupled CFD and observational approach to improve measurements of ocean turbulence (Primary supervisor Dr Matthew Palmer, NOC)

Details of the three studentships can be found at http://www.enveast.ac.uk/nexuss; the closing date for applications is 1 June 2016.

Scientific enquiries should be addressed to the primary supervisor; application enquiries should be addressed to the UEA admissions team at env.east@uea.ac.uk<mailto:env.east@uea.ac.uk>.
