Subject: [Met-jobs] PhD position (INRIA/IRSN, Paris): Uncertainty
quantification based on model reduction for atmospheric dispersion

Hello,
A PhD position on uncertainty quantification for atmospheric dispersion
is available at INRIA, in Paris, France.
In the context of nuclear crisis management and risk assessment,
numerical simulation of radionuclides dispersion relies on imperfect
transport models and uncertain input data such as emissions and
meteorological conditions. Two key steps are to quantify, within a short
timespan, the uncertainties in the computations and to calibrate an
ensemble of simulations using the limited amount of field observations
when they become available. The PhD offer aims to tackle these issues in
collaboration with IRSN.
See the detailed description:

Best regards,
Vivien Mallet.

The postholder will support the NCAS high resolution and earth system
modelling programmes in all aspects of the climate model workflow, improving
the overall performance of the Unified Model, including portability,
scalability, data handling and analysis, as well as the associated workflow
infrastructure. This activity is part of the Joint-Weather and Climate
Programme's High-Resolution Climate Modelling theme, delivering world
leading numerical models of the atmosphere and ocean, using the world's most
powerful supercomputers. We currently engage internationally in the
co-design of modelling systems that will be able to exploit exascale
supercomputing.
You will have:
- Excellent computational and programming skills including FORTRAN, UNIX,
Python and Scripting
- Experience of working with large, complex software systems
- Knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) and numerical modelling
- Experience of developing and debugging parallel code
- First degree in a numerical or scientific discipline
- Strong analytic and communication skills
