An exciting opportunity exists for a research position in computational environmental science, working on a cross-disciplinary research project investigating the support offered by cloud computing for the execution of potentially complex environmental models.

For this particular position, we are seeking an expert in the area of environmental modelling. Ideally you will have experience of different areas of modelling, as well as a desire to develop research interests in the computational aspects of the models, including their cloud execution. Experience of designing simulations for model experiments would be an advantage. We are also particularly interested in applicants who are excited by the potential of working at the interface between disciplines.

This is an area of huge significance, with environmental modelling being the key tool to evaluate uncertainty, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies around flood/drought, food security and the impact of climate change. You would be joining part of a growing team looking at digital technology and its impact on understanding and managing the natural environment (with external funding of £3.35m).

Our partners include people in charge of developing CESM<http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu/> and UKESM<http://www.jwcrp.org.uk/research-activity/ukesm.asp>, providing an opportunity to influence the next generation of world-class Earth System Models, as well as key players involved in floor risk assessment modelling.

Requirements: A PhD or equivalent degree in environmental science/computer science or a closely-related field. You will have a track record of high-quality publications in areas of relevance to the project and the willingness to undertake ambitious and challenging research.

Closing date: 30 June 2016

Salary range: £26,537 to £37,768

The Wave and Structure Interaction (IVS) team of SIAME laboratory,
Université de Pau et Pays de l'Adour (UPPA), Anglet, France is seeking
applicants for a fully-funded PhD project on resonant forcing of harbor
oscillations (coastal seiches) by infragravity waves.

*Project details*
The project is funded by the Aquitaine Regional Council on behalf of the
port of Bayonne and the /Naval Hydrographic/ and Oceanographic /Service/
(S/ervice/ Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine or /SHOM/).
The project aims to study the Bayonne harbor response to infragravity
wave energy. The project will involve a detailed study of the harbor
oscillations during storms including a field campaign to understand the
mechanisms of generation of coastal seiches. It will include a numerical
model implementation and calibration. The model will also be applied on
other harbours considered as representative of the variety of harbour
configurations encountered along the Atlantic coast. Finally, a range of
scenario will be run to develop predictors for extreme water level in
harbours that can be used to prevent damages and secure loading
operations at port facilities.

The project will be supervised by Professor Stéphane Abadie with
assistance from Associate Professor Denis Morichon (SIAME, UPPA) and Dr
Gaël André (SHOM, Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine)

*Requirements:*
Applicants must have a Masters degree with orientation in reseach or
equivalent in the field of Coastal Engineering, Oceanography or
eventually Fluid Mechanics with proven interest in Earth Sciences. The
successful candidate will have evidence that they are proficient in
written and spoken English. They will have experience with numerical
modelling and have the proven ability to plan and undertake field work.

*Location:*
The student would join the Wave and Structure Interaction (IVS) team of
SIAME laboratory working and living in Anglet in the south west of France.

*Application Procedure*
To apply, please email Associate Prof Denis Morichon with a full C.V.
