Martin Herold at Wageningen is looking for a postdoc in large-area monitoring of tropical forest biomass. The link is:

https://www.academictransfer.com/employer/WUR/vacancy/34294/lang/en/

and an excerpt from the ad is below for quick reference.

Closing date 20 June

Job description
-------------------
The Centre for Geo-Information at Wageningen University (NL) is offering a PostDoc position to perform research on the concept, tools and implementation for the independent validation, regional calibration and the use of global biomass products derived from remote sensing and their analysis to assess the impact of human-induced changes on tropical forest biomass. The work is linked with the ESA DUE GlobBiomass project with the aim to better characterize and to reduce uncertainties of aboveground biomass estimates at regional and global scales by developing an innovative synergistic mapping approach using EO and in-situ data. The focus of the PostDoc position will be on the validation task of the GlobBiomass products building upon the work already performed at the GRS group (www.wageningenur.nl/grsbiomass<http://www.wageningenur.nl/grsbiomass>) and the validation protocol already developed as part of the project using different types of existing biomass reference data in a harmonized manner. The new and improved forest biomass map data and estimates (incl. uncertainties) should be used in analysis related to REDD+ and on quantifying the impact of forest regrowth in terms of biomass accumulation and carbon sink in the tropics from local to regional scales, and understanding the role of regrowing forests in the establishment of Reference Levels and Nationally Determined Contributions as outlines by the Paris Climate Agreement. The independent assessment of recent global biomass maps will also be performed for the European region using extensive reference data from national forest inventories characterized by different inventory designs.

Requirements
-------------------
We are looking for a motivated researcher with PhD degree and related experiences in Remote Sensing, Geoinformation Science, Tropical Forest Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field. A background and track record of peer-reviewed publications in remote sensing and monitoring of tropical forest biomass and/or spatial and geostatistical modeling and statistical error analysis is required. Experience in monitoring and assessment of forest aboveground biomass both from the field and from the remote sensing perspectives is appreciated. Further assets are a good understanding of tropical forest biomass dynamics, programming skills with R or similar software, and working experience with and in developing tropical countries. The GRS group is actively seeking to increase the number of female senior researchers and applications from qualified women will be treated with preference.

A collaborative research project between Lewis & Clark College, Pacific
Northwest National Labs, and University of Colorado, Boulder, seeks a
postdoctoral researcher on a project investigating macro-physical
properties of shallow (fair-weather) cumulus clouds.
*DESCRIPTION:*

The work will integrate Total Sky Imager (TSI) visible observations of the
sky dome and observations from active sensors such as radars and Lidars
captured at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Southern
Great Plains site. The macro-physical properties, such as cloud base
height, cloud chord length, and cloud aspect ratio, will be used to improve
modeling-based process studies.

The postdoctoral researcher will work primarily at Lewis & Clark College, a
four-year undergraduate liberal arts college located in Portland, OR (
www.lclark.edu) with researcher Jessica Kleiss. Mentoring for a postdoc
interested in exploring a career at a liberal arts college will be
available (but not required). The postdoc will collaborate with researchers
at PNNL and CU Boulder. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to
spend some months at PNNL in Richland WA each year for closer collaboration
and expanding their professional network. This is a limited duration
position dependent on external grant funding. Two years of support are
expected, with the potential for a third year of research pending adequate
progress.
*DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:*

1. Analyze the Total Sky Imager data and remote sensing (Lidar and
Radar) data from the ARM field site in Oklahoma to retrieve macrophysical
cloud properties such as cloud base height, cloud aspect ratio, cloud top
height, cloud thickness, and cloud chord length. The macrophysical
properties are then used to inform the 4-D data cube of shallow cumulus
cloud genesis and evolution.
2. Keep careful documentation of the analysis procedure through creation
of readme files and a research notebook.
3. Contribute to two research progress reports per year for submission
to DOE / ASR.
4. Prepare oral or poster presentations to present at roughly one
professional conference per year.
5. Participate in collaborative meetings with Kleiss, Riihimaki,
Kassianov, Long, and undergraduate research students to discuss current
research progress and next steps.
6. Maintain computing resources in Kleiss lab: install and update
software, maintain data backups.

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

- PhD in atmospheric science, climate science, oceanography,
environmental science, earth science, or related field with some knowledge
of the atmosphere and clouds.
- Knowledge of Atmospheric Science, specifically cloud genesis and
evolution.
- Computer programming skills, preferably in Python, IDL, C, or Fortran.
- Knowledge of computer operating systems, networks, software packages,
and data management.
- Data analysis and documentation skills.
- Verbal communication skills for collaboration.
- Written communication skills for writing reports and documenting work.
- Graphical design skills for preparation of final reports and
presentations.

*PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

- 3 or more years of experience gathering and analyzing their own data,
resulting in a publication.
- 2 or more years of experience attending scientific conferences to
present their work.
- Computer programming skills in Matlab.
- Familiar with UNIX operating system.
- Skills and knowledge of digital image processing techniques.
- Skill at conceptualizing spatially complex geometrical space.

*TO APPLY:*

Please submit a Cover Letter, CV, and contact information for three
references to the job listing at *Jobs: Lewis & Clark College
<https://jobs.lclark.edu/postings/6019>*:
https://jobs.lclark.edu/postings/6019 This position will remain open until
filled, with an ideal start date of August 1st, 2016.

Lewis & Clark College will conduct background checks on the finalist(s).
Lewis & Clark College is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified
applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to
status as a protected veteran or a qualified individual with a disability,
or other protected status, such as race, religion, color, national origin,
sex or age. Questions regarding Title IX may be referred to the Title IX
Coordinator or OCR

** PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry Modelling **

Applications are now open for a fully-funded PhD studentship in atmospheric chemistry at the University of Lancaster.

The successful candidate will develop and apply a state-of-the-art global atmospheric model to examine the atmospheric fate of so-called halogenated very short-lived substances (VSLS).

Model simulations, combined with the analysis of atmospheric observations, will be used to (i) understand and quantify recent growth in the atmospheric loading of VSLS, (ii) derive estimates of regional and global VSLS emissions and (iii) quantify the impact of VSLS on atmospheric composition. A focus will be to assess the role of VSLS in air quality issues and the recovery of Earth's ozone layer.

----
Full details of the project and how to apply are attached.

The studentship is open to UK/EU candidates. Funding covers UK/EU tuition fees and a stipend (tax free). The position will remain open until filled. An October 2016 start date is anticipated.

Supervisors: Dr Ryan Hossaini (Lancaster), Dr Oliver Wild (Lancaster), Prof Lucy Carpenter (York), Prof Martyn Chipperfield (Leeds) and Dr Chris Wilson (Leeds).
---

Contact Dr Ryan Hossaini (r.hossaini@leeds.ac.uk) for further details.

Best regards,

Ryan Hossaini
