Post-Doctoral Researchers in Convection Modelling x4
Full-time, fixed-term up to 36 months with possibility of extension.
Department of Meteorology, University of Reading
Four postdoctoral scientists are sought to undertake exciting and
innovative research into novel techniques for the simulation and
parameterization of atmospheric convective clouds. This research will
form a major component of the ParaCon programme with the aim of
significantly improving the representation of convection across model
scales from 1-100 km. Two will be working on the turbulence
parameterization at the high-resolution end of the scale (so-called
'convection permitting'), and two on the convective parameterization at
the lower resolution end. However, all will be expected to work closely
together, generating and sharing common data, such as very high
resolution reference simulations, common tools, and most importantly,
exchanging ideas and insights.
You will have:
- PhD in atmospheric science, engineering, physics or mathematics (or a
closely related subject) or expect shortly to obtain this or have
equivalent research experience
- Strong skills in the analysis of data and its interpretation
- Ability to formulate and develop mathematical models, to implement and
critically assess these
- Experience using and, preferably, developing complex numerical models
- Good communication skills and the disposition to collaborate
effectively with both internal and external project members.

Providing REgional Climates
for Impacts Studies

PRECIS workshop September 2016
Places are rapidly being filled at the PRECIS regional climate modelling (RCM) workshop at the Met Office on the 13-16th September, so be sure to register before the deadline (5th August 2016). See below for more information.
5 things you need to know about PRECIS
* PRECIS can be operated by users with little or no experience running regional climate models.
* PRECIS has been utilised in hundreds of climate change impacts research projects across the world. Such projects include looking into droughts in the Horn of Africa, a study of climate change impacts in Bangladesh, and an assessment of vulnerability to weather and climate extremes in the Philippines<http://metoffice.us12.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=e675327337ea313bc76620678&id=c260a4e7ec&e=ba4f700ead>.
* PRECIS is about detail. An RCM allows for complex local surface features (e.g. mountains, coastlines and islands) to be represented in experiments. These features play an important part in local climate.
* PRECIS is computationally inexpensive and easy to install and run.
* PRECIS is driven by tried and trusted global climate models (GCM) used by the Met Office Hadley Centre including selected CMIP5 GCMs e.g. HadGEM2-ES.

PRECIS (Providing Regional Climates for Impact Studies) is a regional climate modelling tool, run on a Linux based PC or laptop, to generate high resolution climate scenarios for any region of the globe. When combined with local knowledge and expertise, climate scenarios generated from our model are invaluable in assessing a country's vulnerability to future climate change and to inform impact studies for capacity building.
PRECIS workshop and your career
PRECIS training workshops are run in both the UK and internationally. To date we have delivered over 50 workshops in Africa, Europe, Asia and South America. This course would be suitable for climate and environmental modellers, impacts and vulnerability assessment researchers and other researchers from institutes such as universities and meteorological services.
Workshops provide essential scientific and technical training in the use, analysis and application of PRECIS through a combination of theory, interactive learning and hands-on practical exercises. Topics cover various aspects of climate science and climate modelling to further enhance your knowledge and skills. Group sessions provide a great opportunity to discuss the use and application of PRECIS with fellow users and the expert regional climate modellers in the PRECIS team.
The workshop costs £750 per person, which includes all materials, lunches and a course dinner (all participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs). Upon completion of the course, you will receive certification in PRECIS from the Met Office and will be able to download and use PRECIS at your home institution, with access to ongoing user support.

What to do next
At the Met Office we believe PRECIS is an invaluable tool for enhancing the way climate information is produced and used in decision making. The information that can be obtained from regional climate models and subsequent high resolution climate scenarios can inform climate resilience and adaption studies and ultimately enhance capacity building.
If you or anyone you know may benefit from using PRECIS or the knowledge and skills gained through our training, then we invite you to register your interest for the coming UK workshop. We request that you send us a short CV and 2-3 paragraph concept note to precis@metoffice.gov.uk<mailto:precis@metoffice.gov.uk> so we can ensure participants possesses the scientific and technical base necessary to benefit from the workshop. Please indicate your motivation for participation, research interest, institution and intended use of the knowledge acquired from the workshop. The deadline to register is Friday 5th August 2016. Please note that there are a limited number of spaces available on this workshop and we cannot guarantee all applicants a place.
For any enquiries regarding PRECIS 2.0 or if you require any further information on the upcoming workshop, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
Kirsty Wivell
