Colleagues,
In mid-August to early September, we plan to open a non-Federal position
who would support us at NOAA/NWS/NCEP Climate Prediction Center in College
Park, Maryland, USA. Applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents.

BACKGROUND:
The candidate will provide scientific support to examine the feasibility of
improving CPC climate predictions based on interactions between the Madden
Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Northern Annular Mode (NAM). The individual
will develop and apply statistical methods to evaluate connections between
the MJO and NAM in the observational data and in climate model forecasts.
Also, he or she will explore whether these relationships enhance
predictions of blocking and winter weather events.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
A successful candidate will have a master's or doctoral degree in
atmospheric sciences or related physical sciences
This position also requires demonstrated competency in analyzing and
working with large datasets and experience in computer programming (e.g.
Matlab, Python, Unix scripting, GrADS, or equivalents)
The successful candidate must also be able to work as part of a team (some
members will not be local) performing collaborative research and possess
both oral and written skills.
DESIRED SKILLS:
Familiarity with topics related to the stratospheric-tropospheric coupling,
tropical-extratropical teleconnections, blocking, jet streams, the Annular
Modes, the North Atlantic Oscillation, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation
(MJO)
A background in climate dynamics and/or statistical analysis and prediction
Experience processing and manipulating large datasets generated by a
weather/climate model
