Dear all,

Flood and Coastal Risk Management Advisor - Thames Barrier, Environment Agency

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, driven and adaptable to join the Forecasting and Response team at the Thames Barrier.

The role
This is a shift based role providing a 24/7 forecasting and warning service for the tidal Thames. Shifts are 12.5 hours and include nights and weekends. You'll liaise with and provide advice to internal and external customers, often to tight deadlines and in demanding situations. There is also an element of solo working with the role, which provides an out of hours monitoring and alarm handling service for the engineering plant on site.

The team
The Forecasting & Response team is a small (8 person) team, 5 of which fulfil the shift role. We are primarily responsible for developing, managing and operating a forecasting and flood warning service for the tidal Thames to protect approximately 375,000 properties at risk of flooding between Teddington Weir and Dartford Creek. We also create and maintain many internal operational documents and provide technical advice to a wide variety of customers internally and externally.

Experience/skills required
The role would suit someone used to working in a high pressured operational or control room environment. You'll be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline such as hydrology, geography, engineering and forecasting, or have equivalent qualifications.
The candidate will be computer literate with excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to work under their own initiative and make business critical decisions.
Experience in gathering, maintaining, quality-assuring and analysing data and information is desirable. You will demonstrate the abilities needed to interpret information and issue flood alerts/warnings and give advice regarding the need for closures.

Within the APPLICATE EU project, the Georges Lemaître Centre for Earth
and Climate Research (www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life
Institute of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve,
Belgium is seeking a PhD student for 4 years.

APPLICATE (Advanced Prediction in Polar regions and beyond: Modelling,
observing system design and LInkages associated with ArctiC ClimATE
change) is a 4-year project, expected to be funded by the European

impacts on the weather and climate in lower latitudes.

The successful candidate will contribute to improve the Louvain-la-Neuve
sea ice model (LIM; www.elic.ucl.ac.be/repomodx/lim/), which is part of
the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO;
www.nemo-ocean.eu) platform, by incorporating in this model
subgrid-scale snow thickness and ice floe size distributions together
with a comprehensive representation of lateral ice melting. He/she will
also assess the impact of these changes on the ability of the EC-Earth
general circulation model (www.ec-earth.org), which includes NEMO-LIM,
to predict the Arctic weather and climate on short timescales (one month
to one year).

*Required qualifications:*

The Georges Lemaître Centre for Earth and Climate Research (TECLIM;
www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life Institute of the Université
Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium is seeking a
postdoctoral fellow for participation to the APPLICATE EU project
(Advanced Prediction in Polar regions and beyond: Modelling, observing
system design and LInkages associated with ArctiC ClimATE change).
APPLICATE is a Horizon 2020 4-year project, expected to be funded by the
European Commission and coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute,
Bremerhaven (16 partners), that aims at advancing our ability to model
and predict the Arctic climate system along with its impacts on the
weather and climate in lower latitudes.

The successful candidate will contribute to a better specification of
the Arctic observing system requirements, that will be crucial for major
initiatives such as the Year of Polar Prediction. He/she will first
contribute to analyse the quality and reliability of existing reanalyses
in the Arctic used for the initialization of current operational
forecasts. He/she will then investigate results from the EC-Earth
(www.ec-earth.org) general circulation model in order to better
characterize the type of data, their coverage and the frequency of
sampling needed to achieve skilful predictions. Finally, he/shee will
explore different techniques of initialization in EC-Earth and highlight
their respective impact on prediction skill.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in large-scale climate, sea
ice or ocean modelling, with strong interests for prediction aspects.
Experience in data assimilation in geophysical systems is a plus.
Advanced programming, post-processing and data managment/analysis skills
are required. He/she should be fluent in English due to the multiple
interactions planned with other APPLICATE partners during the project
and should have demonstrated ability in team working.

The position is offered for 2 years, with a possibility of extension.
The salary will be commensurate with experience according to the UCL rates.

Expected date for entry on duty: 1st November 2016.

Applicants should send (i) a statement of research experience,
qualification and interest, (ii) a complete CV including a list of
publications, and (iii) two letters of recommendation via e-mail to

*Postdoctoral Position at the University of Arizona*
https://uacareers.com/postings/12745
<https://uacareers.com/postings/12745>

We are looking for a creative post-doctoral scientist with a strong
background in instrumentation, isotope biogeochemistry, and/or modeling to
join an interdisciplinary "ecosystem genomics" team seeking to discover how
microbial community composition and metabolism scale to the ecosystem
biogeochemistry of carbon, focusing on a carbon-rich biome critical for
understanding feedbacks to climate change. The position will focus on
methane cycling across land use types in the Amazon of Brazil.

The candidate will manage cutting edge field instrumentation, lead
interpretation of resultant data on isotopic composition of fluxes and
concentrations of carbon cycle gases, and work as part of an international
team studying the molecular microbial ecology of carbon cycling using
multiple methods (from metagenomics of microbial communities to ecosystem
fluxes). Facility with using a mathematical modeling framework to interpret
field observations is desirable, as are original ideas for complementary
investigations of microbial community ecology.

The position is based at University Arizona, but will involve significant
time commitments at international research sites and collaborator
institutions. These are exceptional opportunities to learn new techniques
and to make major scientific contributions to problems of both scientific
and societal interest using cutting-edge technology.

The position requires excellent communication skills and also an ability to
take a leadership role for specific project components and collaborate with
members of a broad international and interdisciplinary team. Fluency in (or
a desire to learn) Portuguese is strongly desired. This is an
interdisciplinary research program, and the candidate need not to be
familiar with all of the relevant methods, but a strong science background
relevant to isotope biogeochemistry, including field instrumentation, and
interpretation of data within a mathematical modeling framework, is desired.
