Project Leader positions in Climate Research
at Pusan National University

The new IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) (scheduled to open on January 1st, 2017, upon final approval of Korean government) at Pusan National University, Busan, South Korea, is seeking to recruit Project Leaders in the following fields:

1) Past-to-future transient climate modeling
2) Paleo climate dynamics (large-scale processes and modeling)
3) Polar processes (ice-sheet-ocean-sea ice-atmosphere dynamics)

The successful applicants, with at least 6 years of postdoctoral experience, will lead and supervise a small research team (1-2 research fellows) to conduct innovative, cutting-edge research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals. The project leaders will closely interact with the ICCP director and other research groups within the center. Travel and workshop funds will be available and access to a new supercomputer will be established in 2017/18.

Applicants should be emerging leaders in their field and have a PhD or equivalent in physical oceanography, atmospheric science, climate dynamics (or related). Applicants should have an outstanding publication record, a high level of independence and proven leadership skills and experience.

The positions are fixed term (initially 3 years) with possibility for renewal of up to ten years. The salary range will be equivalent to 70,000-80,000 USD (including social benefits) + incentives. The closing date for the application is 10/15/2016.

Informal enquiries regarding further details of the positions can be made to the Director of the ICCP, Prof. Axel Timmermann (axel@hawaii.edu <mailto:axel@hawaii.edu>), +1-808-9562720

The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP) will be dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on the hydrological cycle, regional processes, ice-sheets and sea level.

Application procedure:
Please submit a cover letter, statement of your research plans, curriculum vitae, the name of 3-5 references, and a pdf file of three key publications to Ms. Ji Kim (jikim0204@pusan.ac.kr <mailto:jikim0204@pusan.ac.kr>), Please indicate in your application, which project leader position you are applying for.

Postdoctoral position in large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere

Department of the Geophysical Sciences, University of Chicago, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere. The postdoctoral scholar will conduct research in advancing fundamental understanding of atmospheric processes that affect extratropical weather and climate. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to, the role of nonadiabatic processes in synoptic-scale eddy-mean flow interaction; dynamics of large-wave events such as sudden stratospheric warming and blocking; the extratropical air-sea interaction and climate variability.

We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related field. We strive to mesh theory-driven inquiries with data analysis and modeling and as such give preferences to candidates with a demonstrated strength in fluid dynamics of rotating and stratified flows, statistical mechanics, familiarity with climate datasets (e.g. reanalysis and/or satellite products) and an experience in running a general circulation model. The position is NSF-funded and available up to two years, contingent on satisfactory progress.

Inquiries and application materials concerning this position should be directed to Prof. Noboru Nakamura (nnn@uchicago.edu). The application should include (1) curriculum vitae, (2) statement of research interest, (3) the names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran status or status as an individual with disability.
