forecast systems in order to test the value of large numbers of Radio
Occultation (GNSS-RO) soundings. Spire Global is seeking a NWP modeler to
join Spire's global model validation team to implement and improve Spire
modeling systems for data testing. This is an exciting opportunity for
motivated scientists to team work with NWP modelers, data assimilation and
computer scientists in Spire as well as scientists from around the world to

weather forecasts better. The successful candidates will join the NWP
research team at Spire branch office in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
Responsibilities and Qualifications for Research Scientist
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work with Spire NWP team
members to assess and test large amounts of R-O data in Spire's research
global model. Responsibilities will include following tasks:

Preparing initial data, processing output data, running and monitoring
Spire's global validation model daily forecasts.
-
Undertaking the control and parallel experimental runs with different
model configurations to examine model sensitivities to improve weather
forecasts.
-
Testing, integrating and maintaining various diagnostic and graphics
packages in Spire global validation modeling system,
-
Working with team members to run model simulations and diagnostic
packages to assess the impact of GNSS-RO data on weather forecasts, in
particular, high-impact weather events.
Qualifications:
-
Applicant must have a MS or PhD degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric
Science, or equivalent working experience in using NWP models for forecasts
or research.
-
High efficiency in programming: Modern Fortran language, C, Matlab,
Python, for debugging and optimizing codes in Linux/Unix environment are
required.
-
Experience in the use of graphical display packages (e.g. NCL, GrADS)
for NWP model output is required.
-
Experience and knowledge in writing UNIX scripts to handle NWP model
output to produce statistics, diagnostics, and graphics is desirable,
-

As a Meteorologist you will work in a team of experienced forecasters, providing specific meteorological services within a number of sectors in the UK, primarily Transport and Energy. Monitoring the weather through interpreting observations, radar and satellite imagery forms part of the job. You will make detailed forecasts for our customers working in winter road maintenance, as well as alerting them to rapidly evolving hazardous weather conditions.
