We would like to draw your attention to the Graduate Research Programme

?The West African Climate System?

in which up to 30 PhD studies will be performed and respective
scholarships can be provided in the next three years.

This GRP will be hosted at the Federal University of Technology in
Akure/Nigeria. For more information and application details please refer

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS in association with Wolfson College

Grade 36S: Salary ?42,733 - ?57,431 p.a.

The Department of Physics proposes to appoint a University Lecturer in
Physical Climate Science with effect from 1 October 2011 or as soon as
possible thereafter. The successful candidate will also be offered a
non-tutorial Governing Body Fellowship at Wolfson College, under
arrangements described in the further particulars. The salary will be

additional College benefits.

This appointment is part of a University-wide initiative in Physical
Climate Science. Applicants should have a PhD and a strong background
and active research programme in atmospheric and/or oceanic physics, in
areas that complement and enhance the existing strengths of the
Sub-department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics in climate
research, including theory, modelling and observations (instrumentation
or data analysis). The successful candidate will be expected to
participate actively in research, undergraduate and graduate teaching,
and relevant administration.

Further particulars, containing details of the application procedure and
of the duties, may be obtained by visiting

Postdoc positions in satellite and aircraft UV/Visible remote
sensing of trace gases and scientific analysis

We are seeking several motivated postdoctoral fellows to analyze
satellite and aircraft UV/Visible spectra for retrieving atmospheric
ozone and other trace gases, and to perform and participate in
scientific process studies with the results. Instruments include OMI,
GOME-2, SCIAMACHY, and OMPS, and aircraft instruments ACAM (during
the DISCOVER-AQ mission) and GEO-TASO (to be developed under the
funding of the NASA Instrument Incubator Program). Gases include ozone
profiles and tropospheric ozone, HCHO, BrO, IO, NO2, CHOCHO, H2O, SO2,
and OClO. The research involves improving atmospheric spectral
fitting, inversion, radiative transfer modeling, and instrument
calibration, validating satellite/aircraft measurements, and using
satellite/aircraft retrievals to investigate the spatiotemporal
distribution, sources, sinks, transport, and transformations of
atmospheric trace gases.

The applicant must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology,
physics, or a related field and should have a strong background in
remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases, radiative transfer
modeling, and/or analysis of satellite measurements of trace
gases. Excellent programming skills (e.g., FORTRAN) and shell
scripting under Unix/Linux environments, and extensive plotting and
mapping capability are crucial. Good oral and written communication
skills in English as demonstrated by a publication record are also
required.

The work will be conducted at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for
Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The tentative start
date is September 1, 2011 but is negotiable. The initial appointment
is for 2 years with the possibility of renewal. To apply, applicants
should send a CV, a letter of motivation, and a list of relevant
publications to Dr. Kelly Chance (<kchance@cfa.harvard.edu>) or
Dr. Xiong Liu (<xliu@cfa.harvard.edu>).
