Ocean/Ice Modeller
Please quote ref no: BAS 57/11
Closing date for applications: 07 Aug 2011
Main Description
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. We are currently seeking to appoint a postgraduate researcher with experience in the development and running of ocean models. Their role will be to set up and run a high-resolution regional ice-ocean model of the Amundsen Sea to investigate the physical processes that control the inflow of warm Circumpolar Deep Water to the continental shelf and the impacts of this on the melt rates of the floating ice shelves. The model will be forced with atmospheric reanalyses, the output from climate models and ice-cored based reconstructions, and verified by comparison with a growing database of oceanographic observations from the region. The output will be used as forcing for a glaciological model of the ice shelves and outlet glaciers of the Amundsen Sea embayment. The overall aim is to investigate the ocean forcing on the glacier evolution over the past two centuries in order to explain the current behaviour and to ascertain when the rapid changes that are currently underway may have started.
Qualifications: First degree in physical science/mathematics plus PhD (or equivalent)
Duration: 30 months Fixed Term Appointment
Salary: Salary will be in the range of ?26,180 to ?29,410 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
On-line application forms and further information are available on our website at www.antarctica.ac.uk/employment

These are also available from the Human Resources Section, British Antarctic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ET. Tel: (01223) 221508.

Interviews are scheduled to be held on w/c 5th September 2011

We welcome applications from all sections of the community. People from ethnic minorities are currently under-represented and their applications are particularly welcome.

HAMTEC Consulting a provider of quality consultants to the aerospace
industry.

We are currently seeking a University educated engineer who shall have at
least five year's experience with the retrieval of geophysical properties
from hyperspectral infrared observations

Location: Darmstadt, Germany

Start Date: As soon as Feasible

Closing date: 12 August 2011

TASKS:

The consultant will be integrated into the MTG-IRS science support team
within EUMETSAT MET Divisions. This team provides in-house hands-on
knowledge of IRS Level 2 processing. It supports the procurement,
verification, calibration, and product validation of the operational
implementation of the L2PF IRS Level 2 processing. To support procurement,
the team will provide specifications, test data, and software tools. The
team will formulate their initial specifications in an Algorithm Theoretical
Basis Document that describes the physical principles of end-to-end product
processing in the L2PF, and then transfer these, developing them in
sufficient detail to allow a software contractor to implement them, into a
Product Generation Specification (PGS). The team will also provide test data
to verify that the contractor has implemented the specification correctly.
The team procures input test data (simulated upwelling spectra as recorded
by the IRS instrument) through study contracts with external entities. The
team generates output test data using several software tools, the most
important of these being an existing end-to-end prototype processor. The
consultant will support these activities, primarily through further
development and maintenance of the prototype processor, preparation of test
data, and application of the prototype processor to test data. The current
prototype processor is an implementation of a Bayesian methodology to
optimally estimate the Earth/Atmospheric state from a combination of
a-priori information and hyperspectral infrared satellite observations.

In particular the tasks will include:

* Support the maintenance of the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document
(ATBD), describing the physical principles of the L2PF IRS Level 2 product
processing.
* Support the generation of the Product Generation Specification
(PGS), specifying the processing in sufficient detail to allow a software
contractor to implement it.
* Support the development and maintenance of prototype processor
capable of extracting geophysical information from hyper-spectral
space-borne observations in line with the functional description documented
in the ATBD.
* Support the development and maintenance of test datasets that can be
used to demonstrate the functionality implemented in the prototype processor
and to verify the correct implementation of the functionality described in
the PGS.
* Support the generation of static application data for the processing
modules embedded in the prototype processor and, later, the operational
processor.
* Create reports and presentations, including internal reports, on
aspects of the tasks above;
* Any other tasks deemed appropriate by the technical officer in
support of the overall aim of the tasks above..
