Company Profile
3E is an independent technology and consulting company in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The company offers expert technical guidance and due diligence services for project developers, utilities and financial institutions. Additionally it offers a suite of software services that enhance the performance of renewable energy plants, facilitate the implementation of smart grids and assess the energy efficiency improvements in buildings. 3E has also a track record in advising corporate and public authorities on sustainable energy technology, policy and markets.
Its clients include renewable energy project developers, energy utilities, architectural offices, suppliers in the construction markets, maintenance companies, financial institutions and regional and international public authorities.

The Job
3E currently has an opportunity for a 3 to 4 months internship within its Wind Energy Development team. With the support of a coach within the team, you will work on wind flow simulations:
Step 1: Analysis of actual production of wind farms
* Analysis of operational wind farm data in Belgium (+/-10 wind farms)
* Selection of relevant wind farms and periods
* Constitution of a wind index for each site (meteorological stations),
* Extrapolation of the operational yields to the long-term
Step 2: Gathering the necessary data for wind flow simulations
* For the selected sites, analyses and select the suitable elevation/land use/meteorological data (e.g: NGI, SRTM, ASTER (elevation), CORINE, GLOB COVER, GLCC (land use), ECMWF, GEMS, MERRA, NCAR (meteorological)). The meteorological data should be gathered in various forms: pressure levels, model levels, levels agl., combined with the relevant attached parameters (geopotential height, etc.) t
* The meteorological data obtained at pressure levels and model levels will be worked out into data at various levels (cf. geostrophic level), and a.lib file will be constituted directly from meteorological data at low pressure levels (methodology needs to be defined).
Step 3: Wind flow simulations, analysis and comparison of results
* Calculate and compare the expected yields of the selected wind farms for the same exact locations and turbine type as are installed, using all the different datasets. An elevation, a land cover, and a meteorological dataset will first have to be defined as default.
* The methodology will be tested on a selection of wind farms abroad for which operational data are available. The geographical coverage of the data will be further analysed.
* Benchmark the open source wind flow simulation options, and compare results obtained with Wasp
Step 4: Product development
* The whole process will be automated in an appropriate web interface-type tool.
* Appropriate wind maps at various height agl. will be calculated and the web-interface tool will fetch the results in a database.

Profile
* Student in masters degree in meteorology or engineering
* You should have some basic knowledge and a strong interest to further develop your knowledge in the following fields:
* Meteorology
* Wind flow simulations
You should also have the necessary permits to work in Belgium.

Skills
* Fluent in English, knowledge of additional languages is an asset
* Knowledge of meteorological databases is an asset
* Knowledge of WASP or WindPro is an asset
* Programming experience is an asset

Location
Our offices are located near St Catherine (City Centre) in 1000, Brussels, Belgium.

Our Offer
In addition to a stimulating atmosphere in a young and highly motivated group of people, 3E offers:

* A 3 to 4 months traineeship in Brussels

* Sustainable transport: Easy access with public transport, 100% reimbursement of public transport fare.

* An international environment: projects in over 25 countries worldwide, colleagues of over 15 nationalities

Principle Climate Change Scientist (Part-time 15 hours)

Health Protection Agency, Oxfordshire:

The Health Protection Agency exists to help protect the health of everyone in the United Kingdom; our ambition is to lead the way by identifying, preparing for and responding to health threats and setting standards for health protection.

The Agency was established as a special health authority in 2003. On 1 April 2005, the Agency was established as a non-departmental public body with radiation protection as part of health protection incorporated in its remit.

You will join a team of scientists advising on the effects of climate change on health and on how people can adapt to these changes. We develop work on the effects of episodes of high concentrations of ozone, and their association with heat waves. Separating the effects of ozone and temperature is difficult and you will undertake non-lab based research in this area. Developing advice that will allow people to avoid these effects will be a central part of your job. You may be asked to manage a Independent Expert Group to advise in these areas. You will be required to lead in the development of new thinking in these fields and to collaborate with research workers in UK universities. The role offers wide ranging experience in the scientific basis of assessing risks, in close liaison with Government departments and agencies and independent experts. You will be the Center's scientific lead figure in this area over the period of your employment.
