I. Postdoctoral Researcher: Carbon-Climate Model Development and
Analysis, UC Irvine
A postdoctoral scholar position is available in the Department of
Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine in the
laboratory of Dr. James Randerson on topics related to the study of
decadal-scale variability of the global carbon cycle in the Community
Earth System Model. Examples of potential research topics include,
but are not limited to, biosphere-atmosphere feedbacks related to the
representation of disturbance processes (including fires), nitrogen
cycling, land use change, and agriculture. The scholar also may
develop new ways to use available carbon cycle observations to reduce
uncertainties related to climate-carbon models projections of future change.
A Ph.D. in earth system science, biology, chemistry, atmospheric
science, civil engineering or a related discipline is
required. Experience with model development is desired, along with
knowledge of programming languages such as FORTRAN, Python, R, C, or
MATLAB. The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral
communication skills, along with demonstrated ability to work well in
a collaborative environment.
For full consideration, please submit a letter of application,
curriculum vitae and the names and telephone numbers of three
references by August 15th, 2011 to Jim Randerson,
<mailto:jranders@uci.edu>jranders@uci.edu. The start date is
negotiable. A 12-month commitment is expected. Pending successful
performance, the position may be renewed annually for up to three
years. University of California is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity Employer.
II. Postdoctoral Researcher: Analysis and Modeling of the Carbon
Cycle, UC Irvine
A postdoctoral scholar position is available in the Department of
Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine in the
laboratory of Dr. James Randerson on topics related to the study of
the contemporary global carbon cycle. The position will involve
analysis of recent changes in the terrestrial biosphere using
atmospheric and remote sensing observations, eddy covariance flux
observations, and models. Potential areas of scientific inquiry
include, but are not limited to, the study of drought effects on
ecosystem carbon fluxes and fires, analysis of aircraft CO2 and CH4
observations from Alaska, direct measurement and analysis of
CO2/CH4/CO emission factors from fires in the western U.S., or
climate-carbon model benchmarking. The scholar also may develop new
ways to use available observations to reduce uncertainties related to
climate-carbon models projections of future change.
A Ph.D. in earth system science, biology, chemistry, atmospheric
science, civil engineering or a related discipline is
required. Experience with remote sensing or eddy covariance data
analysis and/or model development is desired, along with knowledge of
programming languages such as C, FORTRAN, R, Python, MATLAB, or IDL.
The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral
communication skills, along with demonstrated ability to work well in
a collaborative environment.
For full consideration, please submit a letter of application,

The University of Arizona Institute of the Environment seeks a highly
motivated research professional or postdoctoral research associate to
work on developing a Southwest Region Technical Report, as a short-term
deliverable to the National Climate Assessment, as well as a stand-alone
assessment document. The report will be the product of a multi-author
effort among many institutions, ranging from Federal agencies, to
universities, to NGOs, to private sector companies. The goal is to
produce a comprehensive assessment of climate change trends, impacts,
vulnerabilities, adaptive capacities, and mitigation and adaptation
solutions, for a six-state region that stretches from California in the
west, to Colorado and New Mexico in the east. The successful candidate
for the position will assist in coordinating authors, editing chapters,
managing a review process, and conducting scientific research.
The successful candidate will work closely with Gregg Garfin
(CLIMAS-Climate Assessment for the Southwest/University of Arizona
<http://www.climas.arizona.edu> - <http://www.environment.arizona.edu>),
and members of the Southwest Climate Alliance, a multi-institution
climate science collaborative for the Southwest
(<http://www.southwestclimatealliance.org>).
Depending on experience, you can apply for the position as either a
Postdoctoral Research Associate, or Assistant Staff Scientist. Salary
also depends on experience, $48,000-$60,000.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Ph.D. in a field relevant to the research and coordination efforts, such
as environmental sciences, geography, climatology, water resources and
hydrology, economics, public policy.
Assistant Staff Scientist
M.A./M.S. in a relevant field and 10 years of experience in
environmental writing and editing, with a demonstrated focus on climate.
