HPC Systems Engineer
Permanent, Full-Time
Wellington
NIWA (www.niwa.co.nz) is a leading environmental research institute and key provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research and consultancy services in New Zealand.
In early 2010 NIWA installed a new IBM p575/p6. This system is expected to increase to 107 p6 nodes in 2012. The High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) is used to support NIWA's research activities in climate, weather, sea state, ocean and sea level modelling and forecasting, to support an operational environmental forecasting system - EcoConnect, and to support the HPC science needs of the wider New Zealand science community within the newly announced National eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) framework (http://www.nesi.org.nz).
We are seeking an HPC Systems Engineer capable of both operating a large High Performance Computing Facility, and able to provide support to both operations and to science users at the systems - science interface.
A tertiary qualification in computer science and/or other sciences or equivalent work experience is a must, along with five years' experience in the design, implementation and operation of Linux and/or Unix services. Familiarity with AIX and relevant HPC and storage management software (e.g., GPFS, CSM, TSM, TSM for Space Management, TWM LoadLeveler) would be advantageous.
You can read more about our new HPC Facility on our website via http://www.niwa.co.nz/our-services/hpcf

The RICAM Special Semester on "Multiscale Simulation and Analysis in Energy and Environment" is fast approaching, and in order to finalize our bookings of the accommodation, it is crucial for us to now fix the dates of your stay.
Further we would like to bring to your attention that we are still offering scholarships for PhD students and young PostDocs to participate in the Special Semester.
The Special Semester with
- its four focused workshops with world class speakers,
- the world class research environment/research groups present at the RICAM,
- about 10 established researchers in the field and 10-15 young researchers present in Linz as longterm visitors for the whole semester,
- special weekly lecture and seminar courses laid on for the programme,
will be a great opportunity for young researchers to interact with senior and junior colleagues and to deepen and broaden their knowledge in their area of research. Therefore it would be great if you could bring this opportunity to the attention of any suitable students and if you could encourage them strongly to apply.
The scholarships cover accommodation and daily allowance for the time in Linz. If any support towards travel costs is needed, please let us know and we will try to also help with this.
The recipients of scholarships are required to participate in the entire Special Semester (starting October 3rd and ending December 16). It is understood that the recipients use this time to interact with the other guests of the Special Semester, participate in the ongoing workshops and the accompanying seminar and special lecture. They are also encouraged to participate in the poster session of the workshop that fits their topic best.
For details on how to apply see the special semester webpage
<http://www.ricam.oeaw.ac.at/specsem/specsem2011>.
