The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is seeking a phd
candidate starting October, 1st, 2011.

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is a new
interdisciplinary institute with the mission to
carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of
biodiversity and climate change on the
organism level. It has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer
Naturforschung, the Goethe-University
Frankfurt am Main, Deutscher Wetterdienst DWD and others partners. The
Centre is funded by the Federal State
of Hesse through its Initiative for the Development of Scientific and
Economic Excellence (LOEWE). It provides
a new, dynamic research environment that integrates a variety of
disciplines from both natural and social
sciences. The Project Area E "Data and Modelling Centre" invites
applications for the position of a PhD
position for the Marginal Seas and Climate Predictability Project E3.1
[Ref. #E35a].

The successful applicant will couple the ocean model NEMO with the
regional climate model COSMO-CLM for the
North and Baltic sea basins in close cooperation with ocean and
atmosphere modelers. He/she will evaluate the
implemented coupled modelling system and investigate the impact of the
sea-atmosphere coupling on climate
predictability over Central Europe.

The applicant should hold an earned master or diploma degree in
meteorology, oceanography, hydrology,
mathematics or similar. Good written and oral English language skills
and interest in joining a
multidisciplinary research team are required. Knowledge of German would
be an advantage, and at least the
willingness to learn basic German is required. Good programming skills
will be an asset. Salary and benefits
are according to 65% of a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13,
65%).

The Research Centre BiK-F advocates gender equality. Women are therefore
strongly encouraged to apply. Equally
qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given preference.

The contract shall start 01.10.2011 and will be restricted to
30.09.2014, but will be extended depending on
performance and funding availability. The duty station will be at DWD,
Offenbach, Germany. The employer is the
Senckenberg Gesellschaft fuer Naturforschung.

Please send your application by e-mail attachment, mentioning the
reference of this position (#E35a) and
including a letter outlining your suitability for the post, a detailed
CV, contact details of 2 referees and a
copy of your diploma-thesis and/or other exams before August 31, 2011,
to: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. V. Mosbrugger,
Scientific Coordinator Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre,
Senckenberganlage 25, D-60325 Frankfurt am
Main, Germany. E-mail to Service and Administration:
<recruiting@senckenberg.de>.

For scientific enquiries please write to Dr. Barbara Frueh (e-mail:

The University of Arizona's Department of Atmospheric Sciences seeks a
highly motivated PhD student to work on the NSF-funded
multidisciplinary project: ?Processes and Patterns in The North
American Monsoon Macrosystem?. The selected student will study
precipitation recycling and land-atmosphere interactions in the North
American Monsoon Region under varying land surface conditions using
numerical models. We seek a person with strong computational and
mathematics/physics backgrounds. The selected student will work under
the supervision of Dr. Francina Dominguez

Scientific-technical position in the area of
Regional Climate Research

at the

Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change, University of Graz

The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change (WEGC,
<www.wegcenter.at>) is an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented
research center of the University of Graz, which combines the
competences of the University in the research areas "Climate,
Environmental, and Global Change". The center brings together, in a
building close to the University central campus, research teams from
fields such as climate physics, meteorology, economics, geography, and
regional sciences. The research areas include monitoring, analysing,
modeling, and projecting climate and environmental change, climate
impact research, and the analysis of the human dimensions of these changes.

WEGC's Research Group for Regional and Local Climate Modelling and
Analysis (ReLoClim) focuses on the analysis of the regional climate
system (with focus on the European Alps, but other regions are
investigated as well), dynamical regional climate modeling,
empirical-statistical downscaling and model error correction,
uncertainty estimation, and the development of user-tailored climate
scenarios for climate change impact research.

The ReLoClim Group is searching for a dynamic new member with
scientific-technical orientation to strengthen the highly motivated
team. The field of work includes:

- Implementation and improvement of methods for regionalisation and
statistical analysis of climate simulations and observational data.

- Support of and contribution to scientific studies and publications.

- Development of ?user tailored? climate scenarios for climate change
impact research.

Qualifications:

- Degree (MSc. or PhD. level) in technical or natural sciences (e.g.
meteorology, geophysics, physics, geography, mathematics, computer
sciences).

- Experience in programming (relevant areas: Unix/Linux, Fortran, R,
IDL, Python; notably important are Unix/Linux and experience in
programming).

indent, CV, suitable inserts) per e-mail (preferred) or mail to Sabine
Tsch?rtz (<sabine.tschuertz@uni-graz.at>), Wegener Center for Climate and
Global Change, Leechgasse 25, 8010 Graz, Austria. We are accepting
