The European Research Council Starting Grant project

MODES: Modal analysis of atmospheric balance, predictability and climate

announces a PhD position and a post-doc position in dynamical meteorology
to begin on 1 December 2011.

MODES will study atmospheric balance and predictability in terms of energy
associated with the balanced and inertio-gravity motions. The project will
quantify atmospheric balance based on (re)analysis datasets and ensemble
modeling and use the results for the climate model assessment.

Suitable candidates are highly motivated people with a solid background in
physics and mathematics and specialization in meteorology.
The candidate for a post-doc position should have a PhD degree in
atmospheric sciences and he/she is expected to have experience in
programming, in running and analyzing atmospheric models. We are
particularly interested in candidates with degrees in theoretical
meteorology and data assimilation.

Joining MODES offers a unique chance of being a part of an exiting ERC
project with great opportunities for writing top-level publications and
building an international career. The project is hosted by an
internationally successful Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
(http://www.fmf.uni-lj.si, http://meteo.fmf.uni-lj.si) in Ljubljana, one
of "Europe's Most Idyllic Places To Live? (http://www.visitljubljana.si/).
Working conditions and salary are competitive. Further information is
available from Nedjeljka ?agar, nedjeljka.zagar@fmf.uni-lj.si.

The positions are for four years. The application material required
includes curriculum vitae, research statement, publication list and names
and contact details of two-three individuals who may be contacted for
reference letters.

Applications should be sent to Prof. Nedjeljka ?agar
(http://www.fmf.uni-lj.si/~zagarn), nedjeljka.zagar@fmf.uni-lj.si.

The School of Earth Sciences is looking to appoint a highly skilled Research
Assistant/Associate to be responsible for the further development and
coordination of the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (see
http://www.ccdas.org).

You will be part of a team further developing a world-leading system capable
of quantifying terrestrial and oceanic sources and sinks of carbon dioxide
through the assimilation of various data sources (atmospheric CO2
concentrations, satellite-derived vegetation cover, etc.) The aim of the
project is to give a quantitative estimate with uncertainties of the future
carbon sinks of the land and oceans. This estimate is urgently needed by
policy makers to adequately plan greenhouse gas emission reductions.

You will work as a researcher for the CARBOCHANGE project and will assist the
Principal Investigator of CARBOCHANGE in Bristol in implementing an additional
oceanic component, and proceed in developing prognostic capabilities for
CCDAS.

The post will initially be available for 19 months, with a likely extension to
a total of 2.5 years.

If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed term or a permanent
contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research
experience.

Further information can be found at http://www.bristol.ac.uk/jobs (Ref. 16542)

climate variability

Postdoctoral position in climate dynamics and climate predictability
at decadal timescale
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CERFACS
Centre Europ?en de Recherche et de Formation Avanc?e en Calcul Scientifique
http://www.cerfacs.fr
Toulouse - France
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fixed term for 18 months starting from 1 January 2012
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position funded by the
French Ministery of Ecology through the so-called EPIDOM project focused
on climate decadal variability and predictabity. EPIDOM aims at
estimating the level of climate predictability at decadal timescale, its
sources and associated physical mechanims as well as its uncertainty
with a focus on the North Atlantic-European region. At the national
level, EPIDOM coordinates the ongoing effort in France to produce
decadal forecasts for the CMIP5 database at the core of the next IPCC
report. The projects includes 4 partners namely Cerfacs, where the
postdoc will be based, IPSL/Paris, Meteo-France/Toulouse and ECMWF/Reading.

Among various tasks, Cerfacs has already completed a full decadal
forecast exercice based on the CMIP5 protocol. The work will involve a
detailed analysis of the model performance and the physical mechanims at
the core of the simulated decadal previsibility. Two possibilities
depending of the expertise of the applicants: a special attention could
be laid either on the ocean initialisation step or the role of the
stratosphere. For the latter case, numerical experiments including a
well-resolved stratosphere will be conducted for specific case studies
(decades where volcanic or solar forcing might be important) and
compared to the trospospheric version of the coupled model used as
default for CMIP5. For the former, the focus will be in running and
analyzing new sets of experiments designed to minimize the initial
shock of the forecast and ultimately improve the model skill.

You will work in close contact with the principal investigator (PI) Dr
Christophe Cassou, and will interact with other members of the Climate
Modelling and Global Change Team at Cerfacs. The group has a strong
expertise in ocean-atmosphere coupling on both scientific and technical
aspects (the OASIS coupler). The team benefits from the strong technical
support provided by a pool of research engineers who are experts on both
software and hardware modeling issues. This work will also involve
substantial collaboration with the other partners (Meteo-France and
IPSL). The position presents an opportunity for a strongly motivated
scientist to get involved in an exciting and challenging domain in
climate prediction science. You should hold (or have submitted) a PhD in
a relevant discipline (such as physical oceanography, atmospheric
dynamics and climate variability etc.), and have good scientific
programming skills. More specialist knowledge of global circulation
models is desirable.

Salary will be about 2300 Euros per month after social security deduction.

The application should include a curriculum vitae, a list of
publications and the names and email adresses of at least three
references. Applications should be sent to Dr. Christophe CASSOU,
CERFACS, 42 Avenue Gaspard Coriolis, 31057 Toulouse Cedex, FRANCE ,or by
email (christophe.cassou@cerfacs.fr)

Closing date: 30 Novembre 2011

engagement. The University has over 30,000 students on the main campus
(and over 43,000 students system-wide), 350 degree programs, and a
nationally ranked library system. Columbia, the capital of South
Carolina, has a population of over 650,000 in the greater metropolitan area.

To apply, send letter of application, curriculum vitae, and the names
and addresses (including e-mail addresses) of four referees to the

NIWA is a leading environmental research institute and key provider of atmospheric, freshwater and marine research and consultancy services in New Zealand. NIWA has a strong programme of measurement and modelling of emissions to the atmosphere and atmospheric composition, including greenhouse gases. This is linked to a wider effort to improve knowledge of human impacts on the environment both globally and in the South Pacific region in order to guide and verify national and international strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas impacts on the climate system.
NIWA is seeking a post doctoral researcher in the area of regional atmospheric CO2 modeling to undertake Lagrangian modeling to interpret surface and total column observations of CO2, assess regional uptake of CO2 by the terrestrial biosphere and oceans, and investigate relationships between climate drivers and terrestrial CO2 uptake in New Zealand. This position will collaborate with Drs. Sara Mikaloff Fletcher and Vanessa Sherlock and will be primarily based in Wellington, with some time also spent in Lauder, South Island.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field; strong analytical, statistical, and programming skills; and the ability and aptitude to network with other New Zealand experts on the terrestrial carbon cycle. A background or interest in Lagrangian modeling, carbon modeling, or in situ and/or remote-sensing trace gas measurements is also desirable.
