Post doctoral position in aerosol lidar research
Job description
Finnish Meteorological Institute?s (FMI) Kuopio Unit is a research and
weather service unit located at the campus of the University of Eastern
Finland. Our main research focus is atmospheric aerosol particles, and
their climate and health effects.
Currently we invite applications for a post doctoral position in aerosol
lidar research. The position is for 1 year (with a possible extension)
starting from 1st January 2012 (negotiable).
FMI is operating a PollyXT Raman lidar, three scanning Halo doppler /
depol lidars and numerous Vaisala ceilometers. The Raman lidar has
collected one-year data sets from India and South Africa, and in 2011
the lidars will be deployed in Finland.
The tasks of the successful candidate, in co-operation with FMI
scientists, will include: maintenance of the lidar systems, evaluation
of the lidar and supporting data, preparing scientific publications and
retrieval algorithm development, especially automated and near real-time
products.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD in natural or computational sciences, ideally
in the area of atmospheric or climate sciences, physics or engineering.
In addition, strong experience of lidar data evaluation, computational
skills and fluency in English are essential for this post, and
experience with lidar microphysical retrievals algorithms is highly
desirable. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated scientist with
good communication and organizational skills who is able to carry out
independent research as well as work as a part of a team.
To apply
To apply, please send your CV completed with a list of publications, two
letters of reference and a brief statement of research interests to
<kirjaamo@fmi.fi> (and cc?d to<mika.komppula@fmi.fi>) by 30th September
2011 at 2pm (EET). Please title your application mail ?Lidar Post Doc?.
For more details, please contact Head of Group, Senior Research
Scientist Mika Komppula (<mika.komppula@fmi.fi>, +358-50-520 7500).

Faculty Position in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences
at the University of Michigan
The Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS) Department at the University of Michigan (UM) is seeking tenured or tenure-track applicants at the assistant professor or higher level in the general areas of Climate Modeling and Integrated Assessment for Engineered Designs.
We seek applicants who are interested in the climate prediction modules for global, regional- or finer-scale application to assess the impact of global change and energy choices on economics and policy for a region or a country like the US. For this, a candidate with experience in climate systems modeling, but with the skills and interest needed to integrate this expertise with energy systems and economics will be desired. This candidate will need to develop approaches to integrate climate information into regional- and fine-scale Integrated Assessment models, for which a crucial issue will be to address the uncertainty of factors that influence the expected outcomes and the actions taken in decision-making on climate change. Interest in, for example, abrupt climate change and extreme weather events for ?policy relevant science? is included. Uncovering methods to assess the confidence of analyses will likely be important. So, too, would thorough investigations of the connections between monitoring, prediction and the likelihood of crossing critical thresholds. Focusing attention on the distributions of critical climate-related parameters, such as the climate sensitivity, could also be important.
This position was awarded to AOSS under UM?s Interdisciplinary Faculty Cluster Hire initiative. The Cluster Hire includes one other position in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment with a focus on Modeling and Assessment of Climate Change and Impacts. Successful candidates will work in their primary disciplinary area but will ideally also contribute to the development of greater cohesion among the diverse group of faculty across UM interested in Integrated Assessment.
The successful candidate will be expected to (1) develop a widely recognized research program, (2) attract external funding, (3) mentor graduate students and (4) participate in the teaching mission of the AOSS department and the College at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Candidates capable of developing collaborative relationships in research and teaching are of particular interest. A PhD in atmospheric science or another relevant discipline is required. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, a concise personal statement describing the candidate?s vision for research and education, and a list of at least four references.
For full consideration applications should be received before November 1, 2011. Questions concerning this position and applications (in a single pdf file) should be directed to UMIA-AOSS@umich.edu.
The college is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute,
through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply. The University is also responsive to the needs of dual career couples.

Special interest in processes in Polar Regions is expected. It is further expected that the incumbent will maintain and expand the existing multidisciplinary, integrated observing system and use the observations in collaboration with the modelling sections to better understand changes in the Arctic and Antarctic along with their impacts on sea ice, ecosystems and the global climate system.
The professorship is located in the Climate Science Division at the AWI and is associated with the leadership of a scientific section. The successful applicant is expected to carry out interdisciplinary work in cooperation with scientists from the AWI Geosciences and Biosciences Divisions and from the Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen. Teaching obligations amount to two hours per week at the University of Bremen in the physics degree course, with a focus on Environmental Physics and the master degree course in Environmental Physics, respectively. Didactic engagement, the ability to give courses in German and English and the willingness to participate in long expeditions (several months) are expected.
The following qualifications are required: a completed university education in physics, meteorology or
oceanography; an outstanding PhD as well as other scientific achievements that are excellent when compared internationally; experience in managerial functions, in managing seagoing expeditions, in raising external funding and in teaching.
AWI and the University of Bremen strive to increase the proportion of female scientists. Therefore, female candidates are specifically encouraged to apply.
Severely disabled applicants with identical technical and personal suitability will be preferentially selected. The AWI is an equal opportunity employer.
AWI supports balanced work-life career development via a variety of schemes.
