Job opportunity:
Scientific programmer, in the area of Earth System modelling
Duration: 1 year, renewable up to 3 years.
Opening: October 10, 2011, November 10, 2011
Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC,
Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change, http://www.cmcc.it) is
seeking to appoint a Scientific programmer for the development and
maintenance of its Earth System Model (ESM) at the Bologna division of
Numerical Application and Scenarios (ANS). The one-year appointment
ranges from technical staff member to Junior Research Associates
depending on the candidate's experience
(http://www.cmcc.it/about-cmcc/job-opportunities/job-opportunities) and
is renewable up to three years.
Main tasks will include to oversee the model code maintenance and
version control, to assist the development of the biogeochemical
components of the model system and to post-process, organize and
visualize model outputs.
CMCC is a leading institute in climate sciences with a well developed
system of climate models, Earth System Models and coupled hydrodynamic
marine ecosystem models based on the BFM (http://bfm.cmcc.it) and NEMO
(http://www.nemo-ocean.eu). The models are principally coded in FORTRAN
running on high-performance computing platforms (UNIX). The scientific
programmer will be placed in the newly established Earth System
Modelling group and will collaborate with international research groups,
mostly contributing to the technical aspects. Access to state-of-the art
computational facilities is provided. Questions addressed in the group
include the study of global biogeochemical cycles and interactions with
the climate system. The appointee will also be required to work
independently though in close collaboration with senior scientists in
the field of biogeochemistry and climate science. Attending workshops
and meetings abroad may be necessary.
Professional requirements
A proven track-record in scientific programming and code development.
Expertise in F90-95, and in maintaining and working with parallel UNIX
clusters is an advantage. The work suits a formally trained programmer
(computational sciences) with interest in the environmental sciences or
a natural scientist (e.g., oceanography, meteorology, environmental
sciences and engineering, etc.) with advanced skills in programming.
Candidates on M.Sc. or Ph.D. level can be considered.
Applications
Interested candidates should send a CV, and the names of two referees to
the Selecting Committee Contact Scientist Marcello Vichi, by e?mail
(marcello.vichi?at?cmcc.it) or by post (CMCC, viale Aldo Moro, 44 -
40127 BOLOGNA, ITALY). Further questions should be addressed directly to
Marcello Vichi (marcello.vichi?at?cmcc.it). Interviews can be arranged
remotely.
