Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) is seeking a Postdoctoral research
scientist to perform curiosity-driven research into the physical
processes involved in decadal predictability. Several simulations have
already been performed using the latest version of the state-of-the-art
IPSL-CM5 model. We expect the candidate will contribute to on-going
efforts in understanding sources of predictability, such as those
associated with initialization or external forcing, both in hindcast
(CMIP5) and "perfect model" conditions. The work will thus involve both
analyses of simulations as well as performing new simulations.
This position, based at LOCEAN/IPSL, is available within a nationally
funded project (including CERFACS, IPSL, M?t?o-France) and also involves
close interactions with several European and international projects
(EU-FP7 COMBINE, EU-FP7 THOR, CMIP5,...). It offers the unique
opportunity to address new and exciting science questions within a
dedicated research team. The candidate will benefit from strong IT and
modelling support within the IPSL global coupled modelling group (50
researchers and engineers) as well as the vibrant research environment
of the IPSL/LOCEAN and NEMO groups.
You will have:
?a PhD or equivalent in the physical sciences
?knowledge in geophysical fluid dynamics, ocean and/or atmosphere
circulation and climate system
?ability and willingness to work as part of a team
?experience in statistical analysis/visualization of model output
?strong scientific computing skills, including Unix and Fortran
?experience in running numerical models would be an advantage
The position is initially offered for 12 months, renewable once, and is
available from the 1^st of January 2012. Salary will be according to
experience, within the CNRS band for post-doctoral researchers
(2300-3000 Euros 'brut' per month, before taxes).

The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University
invites applications for postdoctoral research or early career
scientist or for up to three separate positions in the areas of remote
sensing of precipitation, analysis of precipitation climate data
records and merged precipitation product development.
Remote Sensing of Precipitation: In preparation for the Global
Precipitation Mission, we seek a post-doctoral scientist to work on
the development of precipitation retrieval algorithms for use with
microwave sounding instruments that form part of the GPM
constellation. A strong background in remote sensing theory is
required. Additional familiarity with microwave sounding radiometers,
and work with clouds and/or precipitation is highly desired.
Precipitation Climate Data records: The group at CSU has recently
developed long time series of SSMI, TMI and AMSR-E precipitation
products over the ocean. We are seeking a motivated post doctoral
scientist to examine the time series in terms of physical consistency
with other products in order to better understand the underlying
uncertainties in these products. These results will subsequently be
used to identify and investigate genuine regional and time-dependent
changes in precipitation characteristics. A background in climate
data analysis is required for this position. Familiarity with
satellite data and retrievals algorithms is also desired.
Data Fusion: We are seeking a post-doctoral research scientist to
work on merging data from rain gauges, radar, satellite and models
into a coherent framework for local to regional applications to
problems related to the water budget and water availability. The
position requires expertise in mathematical frameworks for merging
data from distinct sources and error characteristics. Previous
experience with precipitation products, the merger of precipitation
products, and error characterization of precipitation products from
distinct data sources is highly desired.
A Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a related field in the physical
sciences as well as strong programming and communication skills are
required for all of the positions listed above. Each of these
positions will be fully funded for the first two years, with a
subsequent year possible at the 50% level. The Post-doctoral research
scientist, with mentorship from a senior scientist, is expected to
participate in securing external funds to cover the remainder of their
appointment.

The Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research (CAWCR) is
seeking a scientist to participate in the development of prototype sea
level forecasts for the Pacific using the seasonal prediction system
POAMA and sea level research activities within CAWCR. The appointee will
have a scientific research background in physical sciences, preferably
with experience in climate and/or ocean science or climate prediction .
This position (reference number: 12757) will be part of CAWCR, a joint
research centre between the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the

Research Associate (Postdoctoral)

Goal: Investigate changes in the characteristics of weather and climate
extremes over the United States using novel statistical techniques
combining observations and numerical climate simulations
Project description: The project is funded by the Dep?t. of Energy and
focuses on detecting ?hot spot? regions?as well as ?flare ups? within
the hot spot regions? that have experienced climate-induced interannual
to multi-decadal scale variations in seasonal-mean precipitation and
extreme event occurrences. In order to address this question, we will
be applying novel statistical techniques to long-term climate data and
climate model simulations in order to determine uniquely whether, and to
what extent, precipitation over regions of the continental United States
is changing as a result of changes in the underlying climate of the
region. Further we will use these techniques to highlight the role of
stochastic and deterministic processes in producing these seasonal-mean
precipitation variations and extreme event occurrences, with a goal of
identifying regions with high potential for making skillful predictions.
Qualifications: A PhD in atmospheric, hydrologic, or closely related
physical science, or statistics. Desired qualifications include
significant experience in statistical analysis of observational and/or
numerical modeling data and good oral and written communications skills.

PhD or MS positions available in ACCI?N program
Three fully funded graduate student fellowships are available at the
University at Albany, State University of New York through an initiative
funded by the US State Department. The students are expected to
participate in an international and interdisciplinary program called
ACCI?N (Andean Climate Change Interamerican Observatory Network) to
study aspects of current and future climate change and glacier retreat
in the Andes. The students will work toward a M.S or Ph.D. degree under
the guidance of Prof. Mathias Vuille in the Department of Atmospheric
and Environmental Sciences (DAES, <http//www.atmos.albany.edu>), in
collaboration with partner institutions in South America and Europe.
In order to be eligible students must be citizens of Chile, Peru,
Ecuador or Colombia, pass the English TOEFL or IELTS test and have a
B.S. or M.S. degree in a science discipline (preferably Atmospheric
Science, Environmental Science or Physics).
