Four faculty positions in the Department of Meteorology, University
of Reading, UK

We are seeking excellent candidates for the following permanent,
full-time faculty positions in the Department of Meteorology, which
resides in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Reading.

Lecturer in Meteorology

We seek an outstanding scientist with an excellent research track record
in meteorological science, with particular emphasis on weather-related
processes. Research areas could include (but are not limited to)
convective storms, boundary-layer meteorology, mesoscale phenomena,
synoptic-scale dynamics, clouds and precipitation, tropical weather
systems, mountain meteorology and the development of numerical models.
The successful candidate will join a Department with thriving activities
in many aspects of weather research, and there are excellent
opportunities for collaboration with the Met Office via our hosting of
Met Office research groups in mesoscale modelling and mesoscale data
assimilation.

Informal queries may be made to Professor Giles Harrison
(r.g.harrison@reading.ac.uk) or Professor Robin Hogan
(r.j.hogan@reading.ac.uk). Job reference number LE11028.

Lecturer in Meteorology and Statistics

We seek an outstanding scientist with an excellent research track record
in meteorological statistics and/or statistical climatology. Research
areas could include (but are not limited to) detection and attribution
of climate change, forecast verification, ensemble design,
predictability, extreme events, weather and climate risk, and
downscaling and regional climate prediction. This is a joint appointment
between the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics, and there are excellent opportunities for collaboration
within both departments. In parallel we are recruiting a Lecturer in
Statistics and a Reader in Statistics and we are happy to accommodate
applicants who wish to be considered for more than one of these positions.

Informal queries may be made to Professor Robin Hogan
(r.j.hogan@reading.ac.uk) in Meteorology or Professor Sue Todd
(s.c.todd@reading.ac.uk) in Mathematics and Statistics. Job reference
number LE11026.

Willis Lecturer in Weather and Climate Risks for Insurance

We seek an outstanding scientist to join our recently established
Weather and Climate Hazards Laboratory (WCHL) located within the
Department of Meteorology. The successful candidate will conduct
innovative research related to the monitoring, quantification and
prediction of risks linked to weather and climate hazards, such as
windstorms, flooding, heat waves and drought. He/she will also develop
and apply innovative research in partnership with business, with a
particular focus on the insurance industry (including insurers,
reinsurers, brokers, modelling companies etc). To enable the person
appointed to focus on the research and enterprise aspects of the role,
teaching duties will not be required in the first two years.

Informal queries may be made to Professor Pier Luigi Vidale
(p.l.vidale@reading.ac.uk) or Professor Giles Harrison
(r.g.harrison@reading.ac.uk). Job reference number LE11029.

Senior Research Fellow/Lecturer in Land Surface Data Assimilation

We seek an outstanding scientist to carry out research in land-surface
data assimilation, as either a Senior Research Fellow or a Lecturer. The
successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a new European
Space Agency funded project on assimilation of satellite data into a
soil-vegetation-atmosphere model. He/she will be expected to play a
leading role in national and international endeavours in this area.
There are many opportunities for collaboration; the Department has
thriving groups studying many aspects of data assimilation, Earth
observation and land-surface physics, and the University is a member of
the International Space Innovation Centre based nearby at Harwell.

Informal queries may be made to Professor Robert Gurney
(r.j.gurney@reading.ac.uk). Job reference number RS11036.

All positions offer a starting salary between ?36,862 and ?45,336 per
annum. For further details, please visit
https://www.reading.ac.uk/about/jobs/ and search current vacancies for
"lecturer". We welcome informal queries to the contacts listed above.
Further information about the Department of Meteorology is available at

Please feel free to distribute this email widely.

Best regards,
Robin Hogan.

Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

Ph.D. Opportunity, Atmospheric Science, Mississippi State University

The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University is
seeking applicants for a 3-year NSF-funded assistantship, beginning on
August 15, 2012, focusing on ?quantification and visualization of
uncertainty in numerical weather model ensembles?. Ensembles are
commonly used to define areas of uncertainty within an atmospheric
simulation, and as such are critical in research associated with
downscaling of climate data for regional assessment, including
sensitivity analysis of parameter schemes and input data and
process-oriented diagnostics of atmospheric variables. The position
will work closely with Dr. Jamie Dyer and Dr. Andrew Mercer in the
Department of Geosciences and Dr. Song Zhang in the Department of
Computer Science and Engineering to formulate numerical weather
prediction ensembles, and will assist in the uncertainty quantification
tasks of the project. Tasks will be completed on the state-of-the-art
supercomputing systems available at the High Performance Computing
Collaboratory at Mississippi State University.

Applicants should have a Master of Science (or equivalent) university
degree in meteorology, geophysics, physics or mathematics. Experience in
numerical weather prediction, particularly with the Weather and Research
Forecasting Model, data assimilation, and uncertainty statistics is
highly desirable. In addition, programming experience in Fortran90, C
and/or the R Statistical Software and familiarity with a cluster
supercomputing environment is highly desirable.

Interested candidates should send a complete application package (CV;
cover letter describing background, training and research interests;
certificates; contact information of two references) as a single PDF to
Andrew Mercer (<aem35@msstate.edu>) and Jamie Dyer (<jd381@msstate.edu>) by
February 1, 2012. The position will be funded as a research
assistantship for 3 years with a possibility for 2 more years of
departmental funding as needed.

Jamie Dyer, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Department of Geosciences
