Ph.D. Opportunity, Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway

The Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway has a vacancy
for a 4-year position as research fellow within the field of meteorology.

We seek candidates with experience and interest in numerical modelling
and analysis of processes related to extreme precipitation and how
atmospheric circulation is influencing this. The main task for the
successful candidate will be to explore mechanisms which are important
during extreme precipitation events in Norway and how climate change may
influence the intensity and frequency of such extreme events.

Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in
meteorology or related fields (applied mathematics or physics), or have
submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline.

The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing at the University
of Bremen is offering a PhD position (TVL 13, 50%), starting on January 1st,
2012 for the duration of three years in the field of

Retrieval of vertical profiles from
ground-based MAX-DOAS observations

The Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen has been
operating ground-based instruments for remote sensing measurements of
atmospheric trace gases at several stations since 1995. The method used is
based on the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) of
scattered sunlight and allows the detection of a number of tropospheric
trace gases and also the retrieval of their vertical distribution at low
resolution.

In the framework of the EU project NORS, the operation of the measurements
is to be continued and the data analysis to be improved. In particular the
retrieval of vertical profiles should be refined and the ability of a new
generation of instruments observing in many directions should be exploited.
This work builds on existing instruments, data, and algorithms, and will be
executed in close collaboration with other members of the working group.

Requirements:

? A Master or Diploma in Physics or a related discipline
? Very good knowledge in at least one higher programming language
? Interest in data analysis and atmospheric research
? Good knowledge in spoken and written German and / or English
? Good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following
fields: physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, meteorology, remote sensing
of atmospheric composition, radiative transfer, inversion theory

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a friendly working atmosphere
and excellent working environment. The position is integrated into the
international NORS project.

More information on the institute and the DOAS group can be found at
http://www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/eng/ and http://www.doas-bremen.de.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of
equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to
disabled persons.

Please direct applications and questions in electronic form until December
2, 2011 to

Dear Met-Jobs subscribers,

a 4-years PhD position is available at the Remote Sensing of the Environment group at TU Delft in The Netherlands.

The title is Urban Rainfall Estimation.

Project Description

It is the aim of this PhD project to develop methodologies to obtain fine-scale rainfall and flood data in urban areas, such that they can be used to improve the short-term forecast of extreme rain showers. A-new and advanced rainfall radar will be installed in the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands as a pilot project, and it will provide high-resolution space-time estimates of rainfall at the urban scale. The availability of fine-scale rainfall and flood data will enable urban water authorities to adequately cope with peak rainfall and will help to prevent the severe pluvial flood damage that in past decades has been associated with these events. This PhD position is part of the RainGain project, a European pilot project for the implementation of rainfall estimates in flood prediction models in order to prevent floods and severe consequences during extreme weather events. The PhD candidate will be working on the development of accurate rainfall rate retrieval algorithms in the urban environment, making use of the polarimetric capabilities available from the radar instrument and combining these data with weather prediction models. Future developments will also include the use of satellite observations in order to extend the radar coverage to a broader area.

You can find more information on the RainGain project at http://www.nweurope.eu/index.php?act=project_detail&id=4198

You can find information and application form at the http://home.tudelft.nl/en/about-tu-delft/working-at-tu-delft/ searching for Academic, Electrical Engineering and Computer science. You select then PhD: Urban Rainfall Estimation.

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,
Simone
