Post-doctoral position in Paleoclimate Modelling at the Department of
Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology and financed through the Bert
Bolin Centre for Climate Research. Reference number SU 619-3021-11.

Deadline for applications: December 15, 2011.

The Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology is one of
the major departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm
University. The department has approximately 120 employees and educates
approximately 1 500 students annually. The main research areas are
?Climate, environment and landscape?, ?Landscape analysis and
geomatics?, ?Glacier and polar environments? and ?Land and water
resources?. Education is oriented towards geography, biology-earth
sciences, geosciences and environmental protection.

The Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology invites
applications for a two-year post-doctoral position in Paleoclimate
Modelling funded through the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research. The
mission of the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research is to conduct
fundamental research on critical processes in the climate system. The
successful applicant will be engaged in the modelling of the climate of
the last millennium.

Job description:

We are recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to work in a project that
aims at understanding the dynamics and variability, both forced and
unforced, of the large-scale atmospheric circulation systems with
special focus on the Hadley circulation and across a range of time
scales within the last millennium.

The project will contain two lines of work: 1) conduct new climate
simulations for parts of the past millennium with a coupled
atmosphere-ocean General Circulation Model and analyse some existing
simulations; 2) interpret the results of these simulations in the light
of existing climate reconstructions based on proxy records.

Required qualifications:

These tasks require a background in climate dynamics, atmospheric
circulation, familiarity with programming languages, preferably Fortran
and Unix systems, and an experience with statistical concepts required
in the analysis of large observational and simulated data sets.
Experience of using climate proxy records with respect to their
suitability as indicators of past atmospheric circulation changes is a
merit.

We require that the successful applicant has a PhD in Meteorology, Earth
System Science, or another closely related discipline combined with
experience of climate modelling. The applicant must have obtained a
Ph.D. in the past 3 years (from application deadline).

Terms of employment:

Two-year post-doctoral position. Envisioned start date is January 1,
2012 (although this can be negotiated).
