POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: PUBLIC SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE/ASSISTANT
POSITION: This is a 12-month non-tenure track faculty position with a
80% extension and 20% research appointment in the Department of
Biological and Agricultural Engineering, The University of Georgia. The
position is home based at the University of Georgia Campus in Athens,
Georgia and is supported by grant funding for a period of three years
with renewals possible.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The faculty member will be responsible for
implementing an extension and applied research program aimed at reducing
climate and weather risks in agriculture and natural resource management
in Georgia and other southeastern states under the auspices of the
Southeast Climate Consortium (<www.SEClimate.org>) and the Livestock and
Poultry Environmental Learning Center Climate Change project
(<http://www.extension.org> ). The incumbent will develop educational
products and conduct Extension outreach programs to deliver
science-based knowledge to agricultural producers and consumers,
enabling them to make informed practical decisions relative to
greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, and the existing and emerging
options available to them. He/she will work with Extension contacts,
climatologists, natural resource managers, scientists and stakeholder
representatives within Georgia and neighboring states to form a working
group that will coordinate agricultural climate change-related outreach
efforts within the region. Target audiences in the Southeastern region
include, but not limited to, beef, dairy and poultry producers,
row-crop, produce, and specialty-crop farmers, mainstream media
reporters and science writers, and high school youth, including FFA and
4H members.
The incumbent will provide leadership in; a) Building Extension capacity
within the Southeastern region to assess needs, and to develop, deliver,
and evaluate extension programs regarding climate change and
agriculture, b) development and implementation of decision aids or web
based climate tools that are to be used by extension agents, farmers,
and natural resource managers. c) Facilitating national dissemination of
climate change information via eXtension (<www.extension.org>) as a
member of the National Livestock and Poultry Environment Learning Center
(LPELC) Climate Change Team, d) Collaborating with other regional
integrated (research, teaching and Extension) projects and with
educational efforts within the region that address climate change and
agriculture, e) Working with social scientists to address the particular
needs of underserved and minority growers in the Southeast, and f)
Fostering climate change-related Extension programs of counterparts in
other regions. He/she will be responsible for holding workshops and
meeting with focus groups to determine priorities for decision aids and
information products, for informing clientele of the products, and for
training users. The applicant will be able to conduct applied research
on the impact of climate variability and climate change on agriculture
and natural resources or in a related field.
ACADEMIC PREPARATION AND EXPERIENCE: A Ph.D. or MS with experience in
one of the major disciplines related to agricultural and environmental
sciences or a closely related field is required with training and
background in developing and conducting extension programs and
weather/climate effects on agricultural systems. Experience with the
development of web-based information and decision support systems, and
an understanding of climatology and ability to apply climate products
(NOAA Climate Prediction Center, IPCC, mesonets, etc.) is desirable.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:Candidates should have demonstrated
skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships,
and an ability to work well with the public and with an
interdisciplinary team of researchers. Candidates must be supportive of
the mission of the Land- Grant system.

PhD Research Project
Twentieth Century Storminess: Developing a Coherent Understanding of
Long-term Trends and Decadal Variability
The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (University of
Birmingham, UK) is seeking for applications for a 3 year PhD Studentship.
Required skills: experience with large atmospheric data sets in
high-performance computing environments. They should have demonstrated
ability to publish peer-reviewed papers, effective written and oral
communication skills, willingness to work in a team environment. For the
data analysis focus, the applicant should also have a working knowledge
of FORTRAN, or C or C++ and analysis/visualization packages such as NCL,
MATLAB, and/or IDL.
Desired skills: include knowledge of physical processes in the
atmosphere-ocean coupled climate system, working with global climate
modelled and/or re-analyzed data.
This is a Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
This research project is one of a number of projects at this
institution. It is in competition for funding with one or more of these
projects. Usually the project which receives the best applicant will be
awarded the funding. The funding is available to citizens of a number of
European countries (including the UK). In most cases this will include
all EU nationals. However full funding may not be available to all

Ice Sheet System Model Project:
the Ice Sheet System Model team at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory/California (<http://issm.jpl.nasa.gov>) is looking to fill a
NASA NPP Post-Doc position, to carry out higher-order paleo-climate ice
flow modeling of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, over the last 20,000
years. The goal is to constrain the Post Glacial Rebound in the area,
and to reduce the uncertainty of PGR contribution to current sea level
rise estimates.
