Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Location: Darmstadt, Germany

Start Date: As Soon As Feasible

Tasks

The consultant will be integrated into the data processing facility team of
the MTG Ground Segment. The general task of the consultant will be to
support the procurement activities for the MTG L0, L1 and L2 product
processing, primarily by developing and consolidating the knowledge needed
to acquire the mission data processing functionality - both for on-line and
off-line functions - primarily for the FCI and LI, and also for the IRS and
UVN (including functionality providing common services, such as data
handling, processor allocation and monitoring, job control, and general M&C)

In particular the tasks will include:

* Help procure the processing functionality for both L1 and L2
processing of the FCI and LI, and secondarily of the sounding instruments,
throughout the procurement lifecycle, supporting and monitoring contractors.
In particular, to:

* Define, develop and maintain L0, L1 and L2 processing functionality
requirements and specifications and those of the resulting L0, L1, and L2
products, including their formats. Monitor evolution of the requirements and
the applicability of their versions to procured items (e.g., facilities).
* Prepare documents to support requests for quotation or invitations
to tender, and, potentially, evaluate responses to them
* Monitor and assist contractors during procurements, including
contribute to reviews, verification, and testing against appropriate
versions of requirements and monitoring and advising on the resolution of
deviations.
* Develop and maintain, as well as support procurement of,

* test tools and software - including prototype software that
implements the functionality defined in the processing specifications
* test datasets that reflect the functionality defined in the
processing specifications

* Support system engineering activities, including reviews, working
with the MTG System and MTG Ground Segment teams, and the MTG Science team.
* Support interactions with the Space Segment, via the System Team and
in the context of the Instrument Functional Chain Engineering Groups,
including supporting the review, and/or analysis, of instrument-related
documentation including relevant ICDs.
* Create reports and presentations, including internal reports, on
aspects of the tasks above;
* Any other tasks deemed appropriate by the technical officer in
support of the overall aim of the tasks above.

It is foreseen, given the duration of the contract, that the most time will
be spent on monitoring and support of the contractors, for which it will be
necessary to invest a smaller but nonetheless significant amount of time
developing and maintaining a strong working knowledge of the processing
needed to produce the L0, L1, and L2 products, of test datasets to verify
different aspects of it, and of its specification.

In the performance of these tasks, the consultant shall comply with the
applicable rules of the EUMETSAT Directory of Instructions (DI) and the
EUMETSAT Management System (EMS), the applicable organisational and
divisional management standards, and also with the relevant working
practices and procedures as well as the organisational and divisional
documentation management procedures. The set of applicable rules and working
practice to be applied during the execution of the work will be made
available at start of the duties in EUMETSAT.

Profile

In addition to having a University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant
discipline, the Consultant shall have experience of software development and
testing for operational highly available near-real-time earth observation
data systems.

Knowledge and experience of the following is mandatory in order of
relevance:

* Specification, development, and testing of product processors for
multi-instrument earth observation platforms
* System software engineering in an operational earth observation
environment
* Test data development and acquisition, and test data and test case
management vs requirements specifications

The following attributes are essential:

* The ability to obtain a full system overview in the area of
responsibility;
* The ability to maintain an overview against a set requirements
specifications with a managed evolution of configuration status
* Very good communication, presentation and listening skills
* The ability to earn the trust of, and work as part of a team
* The ability to perform under high workloads
* The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment;
* A high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills;

Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following will be an
advantage in order of relevance:

* Procurement of operational satellite instrument data processing
facilities from industry, including procurement reviews, monitoring, and
verification and testing.
* Requirements specification, development, acquisition testing,
integration, verification, and commissioning and validation of scanning
satellite radiometer, and secondarily, sounder L1 and L2 product processors
and their support functionality including data supply, job control, and M&C.
* Rapid algorithm prototyping and test data generation in support of
the above
* System software engineering in an operational earth observation
environment including

* Configuration Control;
* Definition and formalization of architectures and interfaces of
complex systems;
* Formalised Software Testing;

* Global standards for data, e.g.

* NetCDF-4 or HDF-5.
* CCSDS standards for data format representation;

* Tools supporting the above:

* Tool based requirements management (e.g. IBM DOORs)
* Tool based Software Architecture and Design (e.g. Enterprise
Architect, UML 2.0/ SysML)
* Unit testing frameworks (e.g. JUnit, JMeter);
* Source Code control system(s) e.g., subversion, git
* Production programming languages (e.g., C++, Java)
* Prototyping tools (e.g., Python, IDL/PV-Wave)

the sensitivity and the feedbacks of the atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere
coupled system, along with its impact on the climate, ice sheet and
sea-level evolutions. The time scales considered range from twentieth
century simulations, paleo-climate, and future scenarios and will use
paleo, in situ and satellite observations for evaluation.

The applicant must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, oceanic science,
glaciology, physics or related field. Advanced scientific programming
skills are crucial and familiarity with Fortran is a plus.

Research Fellow
High Resolution Global Modelling Of Ocean Tides
University of Leeds

Fixed term for 36 months, starting within six months from 1 July 2011

Applications are invited for a research fellowship funded by the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC) on the numerical modelling of ocean
tides. The project involves the development of a new global numerical
model of ocean tides, which fully resolves the so-called internal tides of
the stratified ocean interior along with the well-known surface tides. The
focus will be on implementing the shallow-water equations and specialist
mathematical formulations for stratified flow over topography in an
efficient way, permitting fast calculations at high resolution. The model
will be used to enhance our understanding of present-day tidal energetics,
and also to make direct predictions of how tides have evolved since the
last Ice Age, in response to changes in coastal geometry and rising
sea-level. This is an interdisciplinary project, combining ideas from
applied mathematics, numerical analysis, geophysical fluid dynamics, and
climate science.

You will work in close contact with the principal investigator (PI) Dr
Stephen Griffiths, and will interact with other members of the
Astrophysical and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics group in the Department of
Applied Mathematics. The project also requires some collaboration with
ocean and climate scientists working under the direction of Prof. Dick
Peltier at the University of Toronto, Canada.

You should hold (or have submitted) a PhD in a relevant discipline (such
as applied mathematics, fluid dynamics or physical oceanography), and have
excellent programming skills. More specialist knowledge of geophysical
fluid dynamics, internal waves, finite-element modelling or parallel
programming is desirable.

University Grade 6 (?24,370 - ?29,099 p.a) or University Grade 7 (?29,972
- ?35,788 p.a.)

Closing date: 5 July 2011

We have a vacant faculty position (Lecturer level) in the Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University (www.lec.lancaster.ac.uk).

The advertised area (Ecosystem services) may look unpromising to an atmospheric scientist, but a very wide range of research expertise will be considered, including, for example, the effects of land-use change on atmospheric composition and the interactive effects of changing atmospheric composition on ecosystem functioning. Applicants with research interests in Earth system modelling are particularly encouraged.

Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

PhD student position in paleolimnological research announced jointly
by the Centre for Climate Change (C3) at the University Rovira i
Virgili (URV) and Aquatic Ecosystems Unit of the Institute for Food
and Agricultural Research Technology (IRTA) in Sant Carles de la
R?pita (Spain).

Topic: Reconstruction of the evolution of climate and environment of
the Ebro Delta (NE Spain)

Project description:

The Ebro Delta is an area of high ecological interest (is the second
most important wetland in Spain and one of the most important in the
Mediterranean) and very sensitive to climate change and alterations in
the river basin. Deltas are very dynamic coastal systems, where
geological processes occur at human scale and where the interaction
between biotic and abiotic elements is very intense and complex.
Therefore, the deltas are good "natural laboratories" very appropriate
to study climatic and environmental changes occurring in the past and
to make predictions about the future evolution of coastal areas
according to different scenarios of climate change and human
activities in the watershed. Through the combined study of the
geochemistry of the Ebro Delta sediments and the fossil diatoms of
these sediments, the thesis project aims to investigate past changes
(from decades to millennia) occurred in the Ebro Delta. The analysis
and interpretation of information obtained will allow establishing and
testing hypotheses about the geomorphological, ecological and climate
evolution of the Delta in order to reconstruct its past evolution;
this may also allow establishing relationships between the types of
changes as well as their interaction mechanisms. Additionally the
results on the past evolution of the delta may allow, through the
simulation of future scenarios, the estimation of the impacts of
climate change and land use changes on the geomorphologic and
ecological features of the Ebro delta.

Requirements:

The candidate has to be granted with a degree in biology, geography,
geology or environmental sciences. Experience in analysis of diatoms
and/or in statistical techniques, sediment geochemistry or climate
data series are merits but not prerequisite. The successful applicant
should be have good ability to write and speak English, good technical
skills, power of initiative, independence and ability to collaborate.
Applicants should note that the research activities will take place
both at IRTA centre in Sant Carles de la Rapita and at the URV in
Tarragona

We offer: 4-year contract within URV

Foreseen starting date: September 2011

Application: Detail of the application and documentation required can

PhD Studentship: Variability and turbulence influence in the Channel -
Bay of Biscay from a climate modeling

Abstract
The proposed project involves analyzing the climate variability of the
Channel-Bay of Biscay over the last 50 years based on a MARS3D model.
The first part of the study will evaluate the variability of the system
itself on one hand, and the climate trend (imposed by forcing) on the
other. This assessment will be made with reference to satellite and in
situ measurements, the inter-annual climatology and known mechanisms in
the study area. In a second part, the turbulence influence on the energy
balances of the dynamics of the Bay of Biscay will be examined in
simplified simulations of a 20 year period at different resolutions: are
the mean circulation and spatial variability fundamentally changed by a
better frontogenesis?

Keywords
Variability, circulation, climate, turbulence, nonlinear balance,
resolution, Bay of Biscay, modeling.

Required competence(s)
The candidate must be experienced in physical oceanography and in
numerical modelling.

Supervisors: Prof. Bach Lien Hua (http://wwz.ifremer.fr/lpo) and Dr.

Climate Research Position Opportunities
Southwest Climate Science Center, Southwest Climate Alliance

An alliance of six universities <www.southwestclimatealliance.org> has been
appointed by the US Department of the Interior (USDI) to host and support a
Southwest Climate Science Center (SWCSC). The host institutions seek to
hire several positions to contribute to a linked research program on
physical, biological, and societal aspects of climate change in the
southwestern United States. This coordinated effort will require a close
interaction across teams from the participating institutions, and
interaction with decision makers to inform integrated planning and
management activities under way throughout the region.

Expressions of interest for particular positions are solicited from the
following participating institutions.

1. University of California, Davis. A post-doc to help meet the needs
of the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs), Fish and Wildlife
Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management for
information on adaptive management in response to climate change. The
position will focus on modeling ecological responses of populations to
ecosystems and providing decision support for management of biological
resources. The post-doc will assist in translating the information directly
to stakeholders and agency representatives at state and regional levels. The
post-doc also will work to convey agency needs for information on climate
and climate variability to post-docs and researchers at UCLA, Scripps and
DRI/WRCC. Please contact Professor Mark Schwartz, <mwschwartz@ucdavis.edu>.

2. University of California Los Angeles. A post-doc working on
downscaling of climate model results via nested physical based models for
the southwestern United States and its coastal waters. This is an expansion
of the current UCLA physical based model to extents of 2 to 12 km. The
post-doc will also work to improve this model's ability to capture natural
climate variability. The post-doc will work with local Department of the
Interior agencies, US Forest Service, state agencies, and local and regional
water management groups. This post-doc will be working particularly closely
with colleagues at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to generate a
coordinated and comprehensive set of regional products. She or he also will
also work closely with DRI on presentation and visualization of results.
Please contact Professor Glen MacDonald, <macdonal@geog.ucla.edu>.

3. Scripps Institution of Oceanography/University of California, San
Diego. A post-doc working on downscaling and interpretation of observed and
model simulated climate and hydrologic variability over the 20th and 21st
centuries for the Southwest region. This post-doc ideally will be skilled in
statistical data analysis and synoptic meteorology and will use the
downscaled data products to study variability and change in temperature,
precipitation and hydrologic extremes. He or she will be interfacing with
the UCLA post-doc on fine resolution climate issues and with post-docs
working at other partner institutions on issues of instrumental climate
variability, ecology, hydrology, resource management, and social science, as
well as working with local Department of the Interior and state agencies.
Please contact Dr. Alexander Gershunov, <agershunov@ucsd.edu>.

4. Desert Research Institute, Western Regional Climate Center, Reno NV.
A computer scientist / climate analyst will work to improve the development,
enhancement, access, and visualization of climate databases to meet needs of
the SWCSC partners and affiliates. These needs span historical and ongoing
in situ observations and gridded or interpolated fine-resolution fields of
hydroclimatic elements, data integration, climate monitoring methods, data
search and interactive access and visualization tools, and applications for
climate adaptation that make use of projected conditions. Activities will be
informed by past and ongoing stakeholder interactions, and will be
coordinated with national RCC data management and access initiatives. These
efforts will also link with and serve the 5 CSCs the 14 Landscape
Conservation Cooperatives within the WRCC service region, and USDI agencies.
This individual will work extensively with post-docs at the other 5
institutions to ensure a comprehensive and highly usable suite of products.
Applicants at BS/MS/PhD levels with strong computer science and
physical/mathematical interests will be considered for permanent hire.
Please contact Dr. Kelly Redmond, <kelly.redmond@dri.edu>.

Within the research profiles outlined above, these climate science
researchers will also be involved in authoring of the Southwest Climate
Alliance's contribution to the United States National Climate Assessment.
Post-doc appointments are for one year at the respective institutions, with
performance-based extensions possible.

Information about the postdoctoral opportunities and the Southwest Climate
Alliance is available from <http://www.southwestclimatealliance.org/>.

Tenure-track professorship in the field of climate modelling offered at the
UGTO (University of Guanajuato, central Mexico).

Guanajuato is a very safe & friendly community and university town, see
<http://www.astro.ugto.mx/~kps/GTOimages.html> for photographs.
The astronomy department, which has a multinational faculty of 12
professors
from 6 nations, is hosting a meteorologic service for central mexico. It
runs a
network of automatic weather stations
and a forecast computer model, both managed by two engineers (see
<www.ccaug.ugto.mx, and www.astro.ugto.mx>).

With this tenure-track position in the field of climate modelling, and more
positions to follow in future years, the University of Guanajuato (UGTO)
wants
to establish a research centre
to investigate in detail climate change and its consequenses
for mexico. The pronounced central mexican topography, which is acting
as a barrier between the pacific and the atlantic weather systems,
requires global models with high resolution asigned to Mexico
- an interesting task still waiting to be done. In addition, some mild
teaching load is expected in very basic physics courses for
the undergraduate students of the science division in chemistry,
math and biology, or in form of a specialised course in atmospheric
science and computer modelling (in english, as choices for the graduate
programmes of astrophyscis, chemistry and math), until in a few years a
course
programme for atmospheric sciences will be established.

The suitable candidate will ideally have some time of post-doc
research experience in the field of climate modelling, some teaching
experience, and an appetite to found and foster a new research group.
External funding from different federal sources (technology, ecology and
science, offered by Conacyt), as well as local governmental
funding is available for propsals in the area of climate research,
to finance e.g. a parallel computing facility. Tenure is available already
after 2 years, and the initial salary can be nearly doubled
by additional, result-dependent components.

The original job offer (in spanish) can be found on the web-page of the
UGTO, <www.ugto.mx>, going to "profesores" and there to "convocatorias".
The application may be in english (prefered) or spanish and should
include the
typical requirements: CV with publication list and information
on past teaching experience, photocopy of the PhD certificate, a
research plan
for the next 2 years, 2 letters of recommendation, and contact details
(telephone and email). Interviews can be held via telephone, in english.

The Consequences of Past and Future Climate Change for State Formation and
Security in Southern Africa Supervisors: Dr. Julie Jones & Professor Grant
Bigg (Geography); Profs Martial Staub and Ian Phimister (History)

One of the key developments in African governmental structures during recent
times was the creation of state borders during the European colonisation
scramble of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These paid
little attention to previous boundaries between people or states, but were
geo-political artifacts designed to satisfy colonial ambitions. As global
climate change begins to amplify over the next few decades its manifestation
in southern Africa may fuel this inherent source of conflict by accentuating
existing water and land resource divisions. One hypothesis we propose to
test is that existing ethnic boundaries are the historical reflection of
different climate and/or resource regimes. Change to these environmental
boundaries may therefore feed into renewed conflict and security issues
across the region.

It is proposed to explore this hypothesis in southern Africa, especially
sensitive to the contrasting effect of climate variability from the Atlantic
Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east, by examining the
historical environment-resource contexts of two defining moments over a 500
year period and contrasting these with the environmental tensions within the
confines of the twenty-first century nation state. The methodologies
employed in this project draw from Medieval and Modern History, and from
Physical Geography. The former include critical examination of archival
evidence, supplemented where appropriate by scrutiny of published
archaeological records, and transcripts of African oral traditions. The
latter?s exploration of the potential influence of climate changes on past
and future events will employ three different methods of estimating climate
variability over the past 600 years: early meteorological measurements from
ship?s logbooks, proxy data (from tree-rings and other sources), and
simulations of past and future climate using Global Climate Models (GCMs).

This doctoral project will tie together a variety of disciplines and
approaches. It will equip the student undertaking it with a most valuable
interdisciplinary expertise. Above all, it will give him/her a unique
expertise to reflect on ways of, and develop tools, tying historical
analysis with predictions regarding the consequences of climate change. By
locating Africa and, more precisely, southern Africa at the core of this
method, it will also open new perspectives on development and global
challenges.

The studentship award will pay the UK/EU fees and a maintenance stipend at
the standard RCUK rate (?13,590 in 2011-12).

Applications should be made using the post-graduate on-line application form
at http://www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply and should include an
up-to-date CV with a covering letter. The covering letter must include a
summary as to why you wish to apply for this particular studentship and how
your interests and experience relate to the project.

*Application deadline: 8th July 2011*

IT-Administrator/ Scientific Computing
(Chiffre GEO-6585)

The Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Innsbruck wants to strengthen its focus on high-resolution atmospheric modeling and offers the position of an IT-administrator for scientific computing. The position is a part-time (50%) permanent position and can be extended in the framework of scientific projects (funding is available for at least the next three years). We are seeking someone who is overseeing the tasks of 'scientific computing' with a focus on HPC at the institute, takes responsibility for the administration of the institute's server network, supports the scientific projects mainly concerned with atmospheric numerical modeling and coordinates the institute's HPC activities with other university entities. We expect a BSc degree in informatics or a discipline of natural sciences (e.g., physics, mathematics or natural science), approved knowledge in the administration of LINUX/UNIX systems, programming skills (e.g., Fortran, C++, Pearl, Matlab, ..), experience in software development and, if possible, in high performance computing. Clearly, we seek a highly motivated team player with good communication skills and high flexibility. The command of the German language is not an immediate criterion, but on the long run the successful applicant must at least be able to communicate basic issues in German.

Please submit your application, which includes the usual documents, by July 6, 2011 to

Be sure to have added the position's code (Chiffre GEO-6585) on the outside of the envelope.
