The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near
Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more
information at <http://www.hzg.de>.

The Institute for Coastal Research in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany,
invites applications for a 2-year Postdoc Position (m/f) within the project

PRIME "Precipitation in the past millennium in Europe: extension to
Roman times"

This project, a collaboration between the University of Giessen (Prof.
Luterbacher) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Research Centre (Dr.
Zorita) is funded in the framework of the German Research Council (DFG)
Priority program INTERDYNAMIK. It aims at a better understanding of the
underlying dynamics of hydrological changes and extremes in Europe and
adjacent regions back to AD 0. It aims at ascertaining whether global
and regional climate simulations are consistent with new proxy-derived
reconstructions, focusing on the spatial patterns of mean precipitation
and on the frequency of extremes. The physical mechanisms leading to
slow changes in mean European precipitation and in the frequency of
extremes and the role of the different forcings will be jointly analysed
in the simulations and reconstructions. The expected outcome is an
evaluation of model skills in simulating future precipitation changes at
continental and regional scale, identification of their deficiencies,
and the detection of externally driven past precipitation changes.
Results should contribute to a reduction of uncertainties for future
climate predictions at seasonal and continental scale. The project has
strong links with other research teams in Europe and the US.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht contribution to the project involves
the use of a regional climate model to simulate the European climate
over the past two millennia under different forcing configurations and
its joint statistical analysis with proxy-based climate reconstructions.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht research centre expects candidates to
have completed recently a Ph.D. related to the simulation of climate
with global or regional climate models. Fluent knowledge of UNIX and
FORTRAN is compulsory. Highly motivated candidates with a strong
interest in the use of climate models to simulate past climates,
interpretation of climate proxies and unwavering tenacity to learn and
apply sophisticated statistical methods are mostly welcome. She/he is
expected to be able to work comfortably within an international network.

Appointment will begin as soon as possible after March 1st, 2012. We
offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual
public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are
striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector.
Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered
preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2012/KS 2 to
Max-Planck-Stra??e 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the
e-mail-address: <personal@hzg.de>. Please include your CV, a statement
of interest and the names and addresses of three references in a single
pdf file. Closing date for applications is February 16th, 2012.
