The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS)-NC is
seeking an Assessment Software Engineer (Research Associate) to work in
Asheville, NC in collaboration with scientists at the NOAA National
Climatic Data Center (NCDC).
The candidate shall address software engineering needs of the National
Climate Assessment (NCA). More specifically, the candidate will
operationally, and in a research framework, develop high quality
large-scale research data sets through modification/adaptation of
real-time application software for utilization in analysis/calibration
of in situ data including inputs/analysis/ outputs and quality control
assessment of end products. Additional job responsibilities are
available in the position announcement.
Minimum qualifications include a M.S. in meteorology, atmospheric
sciences, environmental sciences, computer sciences, engineering or
related field; At least 2 years experience in working with ?in situ? and
remotely sensed climate observations; Two or more years of experience
with UNIX/Linux systems including high performance environments;
Demonstrated computer programming proficiency utilizing standard JAVA,
Perl, Python, JavaScript, FORTRAN, C, C++, etc.; Excellent verbal and
written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills; And, must
be able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric
sciences, environmental sciences, computer sciences, engineering, or
related field; Three or more years experience working with in situ and
remotely sensed climate data in large-scale databases including radar
interpretation and analysis; Demonstrated data processing/data analysis
skills with working knowledge of/ proficiency in statistical software
(such as MATLAB, SAS, R) and scientific data visualization software
(such as IDL, General Mapping Tool); And, two or more peer-reviewed
publications in climate sciences or a related area.

Funded postdoctoral positions are available focusing on understanding the exciting and quickly
evolving area of natural biogeochemical feedbacks in the climate system. The successful candidates
will work on an interdisciplinary team working to use available process level and large scale observations
as well as sophisticated optimization techniques to improve earth system model simulations of methane
and nitrous oxide feedbacks. These feedbacks represent some of the least well known natural feedbacks
in the system. Postdoctoral positions require a PhD in a relevant area. The projects involve researchers
at multiple institutions and disciplines, and will have the possibility of travel for collaborations and field work.
