Job opening at Uni Research Ltd in Bergen, Norway:
RESEARCHER IN NUMERICAL MODELLING IN MESOSCALE AND BOUNDARY-LAYER METEOROLOGY
Uni Computing is a division of Uni Research (www.uni.no), a Bergen-based company, and one of the largest actors in Norway's research-institute sector. Within Uni Computing, the Environmental Flow Group simulates, analyses and evaluates a wide range of fluid flows, with an emphasis on the atmosphere and ocean at local scales. Much of the numerical modelling is funded through the Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (www.norcowe.no). The Group collaborates closely with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (www.bjerknes.uni.no), an internationally-leading centre for climate modelling. Researchers are recruited with backgrounds in meteorology, oceanography, geology, physics and mathematics.
A scientific position as either a fixed-term Researcher or permanent Senior Researcher is available at Uni Computing, Bergen, Norway. Applicants with experience in numerical modelling and local-scale meteorology are sought. A PhD in physics, mathematics, oceanography, meteorology, computer science or a related discipline is required, along with competence in prognostic meteorology and use of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). Applicants should have good knowledge of scientific programming using Fortran, preferably in a Linux environment. Regular reporting of results will be required.
An understanding of ocean waves and wind energy, and a familiarity with computational fluid dynamics, large datasets and model validation would all be advantageous. Candidates must be self-motivated while also flexible and comfortable in team work, and have the ability to advance a scientific career in meteorology and related disciplines. Applications from women are particularly welcome. The fixed-term position is for two years, with the possibility of extension. A good publication track record, evidencing a keen interest in boundary-layer physics, is required for appointment at senior level. Further information can be obtained from Group Leader Angus Graham, e-mail: angus.graham@uni.no, phone: +47 55584656.
